Sawtooth tire wear pattern on my 335i

i was inspecting my tires the other day and noticed a sawtooth thread pattern on both the front tires. If I run my hand along the threads in the outer circumference of the tire, it is smooth is one direction but has a sawtooth feel in the other direction.

I took the car to the dealership. They checked the alignment and just called me saying there are no alignment issues and this is how a 335i's tire wears. Has anyone else experienced this ? Any suggestions on what could be causing this ? This wear pattern doesn't seem normal to me.

I had this too, I think it's widespread try searching runflats. Fuckin' run-flats suck. Now I have Goodyear F1 19" 10x better all around.

I don't know why this happens though I'd be interested too.

just rotate them and they will smooth out.....I had the exact same problem on my G35.
Just make sure the tires are not directional, they should only state OUTSIDE on the tire and have no arrows. Mine don't so I can just flip the fronts and rears from side to side....
Worked great on G35 and I am about ready to do it on my 335i.

If you don't flip them, they will get NOISEY as hell....and you will have to replace them sooner....

thanks guys for the responses. I just came back from the dealership and was told that a BMW NA rep will be at the dealership week after next. They want to show him the tires. I'm not sure if they are serious about getting the issue sorted out or are just giving me the run around. In any case I'm going to give them the benefit of doubt and take the car. I'll keep you posted on the outcome. I'm going to rotate the tires anyway in the interim.

That sawtooth aka scalloping was the same problem the "early" bridgestone all-season RFT tires had. I was told that the compound was modified in Oct/Nov 2006. (~4506 date code)

How many miles on your car? I'm sure the 335 eats tires really fast.

I have the same on all my cars, past & present, sedan & minivan alike. Different forces (mostly braking) exerts more force to the leading part of the tread, causing it to wear more, hence the sawtooth shape.

Spoke with different manufacturers, same response. I wouldn't worry as long as the tires wear evenly in general. Just rotate them regularly, if not directional+staggered.

If they are the Turanza EL 42 take the car in and tell them you have uneven waer and you know there is a technical belletin. Bulletin no. is 36 06 06. Not all tires qualify based on the manufacture date, but argue. Maybe somehow you got an old batch.

I claimed at 5900 miles and got four new tires free.

Rotating won't do %$#@ - they wear prematurly and you will be lucky to get 20 000 miles.

Mine are the potenzas. AFAIK, there isn't a bulleting from BMW for the potenzas. I wrote an email to the dealer saying that I was going to contact BMW NA and they wrote back asking what I would like to see happen. I'm going to ask that my tires get replaced. Question is, ideally what should I get them replaced with. If they put in a new set of potenzas, I'll be in the same situation a few thousand miles later. Any advice would be appreciated !

I complained about mine and got the replaced for free...

I have seen this issue a couple times. Just rotate them side to side and it will go away. DO NOT rotate front to back, you have a staggered setup.

If they are going to be warranty, they will be replaced with the same tire.

Which won't really help because I'll be in the same boat 4000 miles later. What happens after this wears the same way ?

This problem was incurred on 350Z's with Potenza's. First, the dealer tried adjusting the alignment on mine. Then they rotated the front tires, left to right, requiring dismounting mounting and rebalancing. Then they bought two new front tires.
The condition, sometimes called feathering, occurs at lower highway speeds (50-65) and is not caused by heavy braking or on-track conditions. In fact, mine got better after a track session.
After my replacement set went bad after 5000, I bought a set of REO -50's and the condition pretty much went away. It took a year for Nissan to accept fault and they paid for the two new fronts and were generous with the mounting charges so I was out only about $150 for the four new tires.
My E92 335i MT had this condition show up around 5000 miles and I recently took it to the dealer. Haven't had a decision yet but he asked for a little more time.

I had this problem on my 335i coupe, MT sport package, at roughly 8,000 miles, BMW rep checked them out and replaced them, I went with Michelins, all at no charge.
