Tell me about it, 6 weeks ago I was considering a budget speaker upgrade, since then I've had all the speakers replaced with Gladen units driven by Mosconi amps Front (Gladen One 120.4 DSP & Bluetooth) & Rear (120.2). By the time the MoBridge iPod controller goes in at the weekend I won't be far off 2k .... ouch
Snap. Mb quart 3 way. 2 Genesis amplifiers, diamond sub. Custom enclosure cabling and fitting and £2k hole in my bank account.

It has 16 band equiliser.
This HU does auto tune the whole setup based on the interior of your car, and I must say it does a brilliant job.

It all depends on if you are going to amplify it or not.

If you are planning NOT to amplify, then simply buy E9x hi-fi speakers which are 2 ohms. It makes them slightly more sensitive to the watts which your HU can produce and sound gets louder.

If you are going to amplify the front mids, then there are two options.
1) Co-axials: You can buy a brand new pair from James (Sohlman).
2) Components: You'd require tweeters housing for these.

I hope that you know the pros / cons of each of these two and their effects on SQ.

Setting up your front is not difficult. There are enough videos on the internet showing you how to change the mids.

When are you going to write some feedback on your sound system?

Sparky - If you have the base stereo HU then i would stick to 4 ohm speakers if not amplifying. If you replace them with 2 ohm speakers, then you could fry your HU

Have a 4 channel amp for the front end but as above really need a harness fitting 1st.

Yeah i would definitely recommend amping your system. Send Mr Singh a PM. He has harnesses. He also has a very nice plug and play kit you can consider, which includes the tweeters, mids and underseats.

Mob
I may differ with you on that. If you do math and all the calculations, amp produces nearly double the watts on 2 ohms than 4 ohms.

You could fry/ overheat your amp / HU if you are intending to use 8 ohm driver.

And just to give you some evidence, L7 mids and tweeters are 4 ohms each and they get connected in parallel, and they are 2 ohms final impedence.
I have hi-fi mids sitting at my place. They are 4 ohms each but when tweeter and mid connected, they are 2 ohms final impedence.

Lastly, I have personally used 2ohm driver in my car during stage 1, and had them for about 2-3 months. Nothing fried.

On a side note, all of you enjoy this video.

Fair enough makkan, i just wouldn't risk it personally. Eventually it could do some damage.

It's like putting a 2 ohm load on a 4 ohm stable amp. It's not going to fry it straight away but could lead to it. I think i'm right in thinking that the HU IC is not 4 ohm stable.

Edit: i thought hifi speakers present a 2 ohm load, but they don't (apart from the woofers i think). So ignore me

No worries bud. I am only saying it as I have experimented it.
I also have Hi-fi mids and tweeters and they are 4 ohms each but produces final impedence of 2ohm.

When are you starting your sound installation on 335D?

I should've started it the other week but been a bit lazy And now its really cold!

Once the weather clears up i'm going to get some plywood and make a start on those adaptors for the morels. That is the only thing that might delay me. I really can't wait!

It's a work still in progress, the speakers and amps etc were fitted a couple of weeks ago but it still hasn't been coded to HiFi or set up properly.

The first weekend they ran out of time and the guy that does the coding had gone home - I spent the following week being constantly taunted by an airbag light had been tripped & which I couldn't turn off.

The last weekend they found that for some reason the Viper alarm was preventing access to the computer, when that was finally sorted Autologic had a thre a wobbler and refused to co-operate without a "brown OBD to ethernet lead"

This week the coder has spoken to Autologic and now has the lead, so my car is going in again on Friday & will hopefully have all the coding done, sound system properly setup, a rattle from one of the subs sorted and a MoBrdidge iPod controller fitted.

With luck I'll then be able to sit back and enjoy the new system while contemplating whether it was all worth the best part of $2k

That tells you that BMW are not easy to work on.

MoBridge, now that's getting real serious. Hopefully you get it running right soon!

I'll find out one way or the other on Friday, I'm looking forward to getting it all sorted - the system is already a huge improvement over the original BMW rubbish & it can only get better once it's tuned to the car, which I'm relyng on John @ 360 for.

I notice the DSP has presents, do you know if Gladen can supply downloadable optimised settings files for the car?

I found it a lot of fun to optimise my DSP manually. You still going to make a few adjustments to fine tune it?
