Do I have this right?
Thinking of going with a JB4 tune and the few bolt on mods.
I have a 2011 e92 335i n55. It has the manual transmission. I would change the intercooler, spark plugs, ignition coils, down pipe, charge pipe, and a few associated hoses. Oh and the intake. Two main questions. 1) would the stock clutch at 130k miles be ok? Should I upgrade the clutch or just replace with a new stock? 2) with the catless downpipe, I probably would not pass inspection in Delaware. Is that right? If so, then I probably shouldn't change them. I'm not going to a track. It is just for my own enjoyment. |

I wouldnt mess around with the intake, after markets have shown more harm than good (decrease hp, higher iat and check engine lights). Stock is more than capable..
Your clutch will be fine and will tell you when its time to replace. Having catlesss doesnt automatically failed emissions, if they just go by OBD then there is ways to not throw code (MHD) but if they do visual then yes fail... |

Sounds like a good set of mods. A few thoughts:
-Clutch is fine unless it starts slipping. At 130k it's anyone's guess. My '08 335i (N54) is fine on JB4 Map 2, but Map 5 causes the clutch to slip due to the torque (I have pretty much all mods possible except meth and turbos). I'd do the mods and go from there. I haven't researched the clutch for N55 models, but on the N54 at least the 335is clutch is a relatively inexpensive upgrade over stock that will take the HP levels you are talking about. -You will have to look up your inspection rules. In PA, they do an OBDII check for 'emissions readiness' (so just auto-clearing the codes won't cut it) but no sniffer or visual. I may or may not get around this between the Cobb BEF and JB4 in my 2011 335i, causing the car to report full emissions readiness... They also make high-performance catted downpipes that could be a good option if you need to retain emissions readiness. -Forget the intake. I actually have the BMS N55 intake sitting in my basement collecting dust because I hated the sound (you REALLY hear the turbo), and there is no appreciable power gain. Save your money.

i have the same car as you but awd...
when I went MHD 2+ my stock clutch would not hold, i was less that than 30k miles on the clutch so I would expect to have to replace it. the 335is or 535i clutch is supposed to work for cheap but I went Spec 2+ so I had the option of an upgraded turbo without changing it again, feel is close enough to stock not to matter as long as you are not new to driving a manual. |
