Sh@t box - B6 Avant v Alfa 159
I've always wanted to own a crappy run about for town and kids duties.
These 2 got me thinking after borrowing a works 2.0 diesel which was dog awful slow and hideous understeer, but it was massively liberating treating it horribly, aiming for potholes and not caring where it was parked. The 49mpg was very handy and estate loading too as we do a lot of miles most weekends with kids and bags. I was thinking of taking a gamble of 5k and adding one to the drive, see how we get on and see if the mrs wants to give up her company car for it. Alternatively i should be able to sell it for the same or a v.small loss if it doesn't work out. The more i spend the less liberating the experience so i said around 5k and went straight to the 159 alfa's but predictably after a little research they have various common issues despite being, imo very good looking estates. The B6 Avant however seems bulletproof and quite nice inside + gives excellent mpg and none of the complex diesel DPF shit to worry about. |

i had a 02 audi a4 tdi 130bhp which had been remapped was quick enough and got 49 mpg on the motorway
cost 6.5k the clutch went was 0.5k to replace, dual mass flywheel is the big cost's on these and one to watch out for sold it 1 year later 5.5k so pretty cheap motoring also think the audi would be easlier to sell than a alfa |

Just remember they need a timing belt change at 80k miles and it is a massive job.
The novelty of an FWD A4 will soon wear off mate, buy your self a nice E39 estate for £3k and spend the rest on fuel. |
