Blew my motor....
Yep, you read that title right. Blew my damn motor at 118k miles. Car was running smoothly as usual. Turned it on one night and the damn thing was misfiring. Was expecting a bad ignition coil but took it in the shop and after some investigating, my mechanic suspects that the valve under the spark plug in cylinder 6 broke, got sucked into the cylinder, and destroyed it....
My car is an automatic and even he, a bmw certified technician, said hes never seen this happen on an n52, especially with only 118k miles. Was quoted at the cheapest to replace the whole cylinder 6 system and have it re bored for 1600... But i may just attempt to sell the car as is and get my a n54/55. Also, its possible i may have to swap the engine... Man this is just shitty luck.:conf used2 |

That sucks, I've followed this forum for a long time and have never seen an n52 let go.

You said your mechanic "suspects", did he prove anything with a scope? I find it hard to believe that a valve would let go with normal driving, especially with an AT. I dunno I would make sure it is proven that its completely gone.

I see you have a 330i. did a Disa valve let go and fall into the valvetrain? I've heard of that happening before, hence the GAS kit coming out to resolve the longterm issue.

Dang. Interesting! Gotto watch out. You probably ran it with low oil. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe with a piece of the DISA flap stuck under the valve.

Also keen to know exactly has gone wrong here. Sounds very strange! Very unfortunate of course!

Definitely get another opinion on exactly what happened before shelling out anything for a repair. If it is indeed what you mechanic says, and he is willing to do it for $1600, I would leap at the chance.
