How can you test a steering rack OFF the car?

Just picked up an m3 steering rack, but the boots have some fluid residue on them. Not sure if it came during removal or if the steering rack is leaking (seller told me it was in working condition).

is there a way to test a steering rack thats off the car, before an install?

Add some fluid and see if it will leak.
