guess I'm glad I got my e90 as I'm not sold on the n55. Especially now that it seems the n54 is staying in the more "sporty" body styles. That little tidbit alone (if true) makes me think that the n55 is not going to perform as well as the n54. Plus valvetronic is going to be a PITA for the tuning community.

My dealer just got it today and my good friend and salesman there gave it to me just a couple of hours ago.

This for the upcoming 2011 models? They aren't changing any 2010 models are they? I have a 2010 335 coupe that's getting ready to hit production and I want the N54.

Looks like no E90 335is then...

I wonder why the Z4 sDrive35i is keeping the N54 when its not the "high output" version in the *is models.

the n54 is going to be linked with the DCT so thats likely why they keep the n54. The n55 probably hasn't been mated to the dct yet.

I am not impressed. Why are they giving us a single turbo on the same engine we had a twinturbo on? Is this supposed to cure the HPFP problem, the problem I haven't seen yet.

Because it makes the same power at lower RPM and its lighter and more efficient.

As for tuning potential vs the N54, no one knows yet. But on paper, the N55 is an improvement over the N54 in stock form.

well the motor is 40lbs lighter than the current n54, so that is definitely an improvement.

i like the twin turbo since i believe it helps w/low end and there isnt as much lag. i trust bmw

Im guessing you don't like the idea of the single turbo because it doesn't sound as cool and "twin turbo". Its true! .....But its a better setup.

Why isn't the E90 sedan on the excluded list? Does that mean that there is a possibility that the N55 will peak its head on the last prod. model E90?

Doesn't seem wise on bmw's part to stuff a brand new engine in the last model year car.

The N54 was bmw's way of testing the market and put them back on the map in the force induction game since being absent for all these years. I think they over engineered the N54 on purpose (aside from the HPFP). I have a feeling the N55 is where they will concentrate more on cost cutting (cheaper to build) and focus on maximizing profits. On paper the N55 doesn't sound like much of an improvement to me.

my 2cents.

Interesting. There is definitely something to the "cheaper" argument here. Simpler plumbing, one less turbo.....it has to be cheaper to produce.

I'm not saying the N55 has inferior (tuned) performance, just that it looks certain to be less expensive.

If I understand all of the above correctly, N55.

i think the power of the N55 will be "less" underrated, and closer to actual figures. So, all i can say is that i am glad to be part of the N54 community i also find it interesting that the n54 is in the sportier cars

I read an article yesterday in a German car magazine confirming the N55 will not be introduced in the current 3series, but reading the above this is not the case...
