japanese cars are starting to lose their "reliable" reputation, just look at the latest rankings. People haev been brainwashed that only japanese cars are reliable. Hardly the case. With that said, ive never felt 100% comfortable owning a FI car

Doesn't both the 330i & 325i share the same engine and electronics?
Are you sure your dealership isn't overstocking 330i, and they are trying to get you to buy one?

You're right.... but thinking about it I was amused by the fact that I know more people that drive circa '86 BMW's than circa '86 Toyotas. There's a lesson there somewhere....

Less complexity usually means better reliablity. In reality these engines are too new to rate.

Turbo vs Non Turbo. The 335 worries me because of its new addition of Twin Turbos on the engine. I would say the 328 would most probably be higher on the reliability scale compared to the 335. Regardless to say, I have a 335...

having never owned a BMW I'm getting kind of weary seeing that quite a few people have "warned" me of ongoing issues/malfunctions/overall unreliability!
trying not to generalize ...realize that issues vary on a car by car basis. I'm reminded constantly that you drive a bimmer for the experience, not because it's reliable as an Accord (although that's up for debate as well)

Remember this:

Issues will be extrapolated when you're reading things on an internet forum. We are only a very small percentage of BMW owners. You'll be fine buying a BMW.

That's why I got a 328 since I plan to keep the car well past warranty.

Hats off to the 335 owners. Without beta testers there won't be a reliable product. You have helped to identify 2 issues future owners won't need to face: HPFP and the oil cooler.

I've had my 325i for over 2.5 years and 35000 miles with zero problems. I'm assuming that the 328 would follow the same trend..

Different engine, I think he was talking about how the engine is more reliable. It was a long time ago, and he was the driver driving me back home (dropped off the car for service), he wasnt trying to sell me anything.

Wrong!

" Both 325 and 330 share the SAME 3.0 liter engine (N52) and internals. BUT the 325i came saddled with a more restrictive exhaust & catalytic converters, a single stage intake manifold (vs the 3-stage manifold of the 330i), and BMW's "detuned" engine computer."

As far as which is more reliable 328 v 335? There are some issues like the fuel pump which have sidelined more than a few 335i's recently.. However that is not a long term issue.. Long term one could make the case that a N\A engine would outlive a TT..Only time will tell..

But that is just the engine.. There are some horror stories regarding E46 transmissions losing reverse gear.. The 335i has a different transmission than the 328i.. As to which might be more reliable over the long term is anyone's guess..

The rest of the chassis is pretty much the same (electronics, suspension, etc.)..

First of all, what the dealer told you (330 vs. 325) is a plain BS -- trying to sell you more expensive (and at the time less demanded) car.

Second, besides the fuel pump fiasco and some overheating issues in the beginning, both, 335 and 328, have been reliable...so far. I love turbos, but I am cautious about their long term reliability. In addition to that, the placement of the turbos (back, under the engine) suggests that if they need to be replaced the whole engine would have to be pulled out = $$$ (of course, all that after the warranty expires.

One thing for sure -- I will never buy the first year Bimmer again -- first, they upgrade and add some essentials 6 months after the launch (Sept 2005), the the overheating and oil cooler miss, then the Fuel Pump crap...

If I were to chose between the two, I would still take the 335...

Okay cool, I heard all these horror stories about the 335i, and no, fuck toyota, I'll never buy one in my life. Okay maybe a lexus, but not a shitota. Haha I have my own mechanic shop, but I really don't wanna have to fix my own car all the time there. I just want something fun to drive that wont break down every 2 months. And yeah you buy a bmw for the fun of it, but you're not gonna buy a car that cant handle that kind of driving. But thanks guys! I feel a lot better about getting a 335i now haha.

According to Consumer Reports:

328i RWD: 3/5 - "Average"
335i RWD: 1/5 - "Much Worse Than Average"

The AWD versions actually scored better - 4/5 for the 328i and 2/5 for the 335i. Go figure.

True, but almost completely irrelevant.

What does matter is how OFTEN they have their issues. And the 335 has them a lot more often.

I just wrote a long review for reliability yesterday. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=514771

Definately I would opt for 330 or 328, Ive hears good things about the 328 in US. Good Relability compared to 335. I think after trying out the 335, its awsome for a fun drive, but the issues to go with it...jeez. Turbo parts, HPFP...a lot of agro, the chance of you getting a bad one or one with issues can be as little as 1 in 1000. When they fail, its unexpected, and worst situation. My recommendation, go with the most relaible if you drive a lot (330 or 328). If you drive rarely and want a fun ride, 335.
