Precision Raceworks coils-Are they worth it?
Like the title says, are they worth the money? Running Pure 600's, downipes, intercooler, inlets/outlets, the works,,,
I am waiting on 2 step colder NGK's as I am getting missfires at higher gears under load. I am willing to bet i likely need new coils as well. I'm running MHD stage 2+ for reference. Is it worth the moeny upgrading to these? |

MHD stage 2+ on Pure 600 turbos and Inlets/Outlets ? Should be on a custom map, stage 2+ maps are for stock turbos and don't take inlets/outlets into consideration. |

Would love a custom map. That may be on the list of things for the future. Pretty happy with how fast the car is currently. Going with the Pure 600's was more for overhead then anything else.

If it's working fine, then you may be able to get away with OTS stage 2+ maps for the time being. Did you check your logs and codes to see which cylinders were misfiring and swapped plugs and coils round to confirm? |

Swap plugs from cylinder 2 to another one and check if misfire follows, if it doesn't, then swap coils frim cylinder 2 to another and see if misfire follows. Could be coils and/or plugs at fault. |

I would check out a new product by Nexsys Motorsports using B58 coils. They have tested all/most coils for N54 and the B58 coils perform the best pretty much
Take out the spaces and 00 = oo . Zeros equal ohs lol Nexsys plate and coil info https://www.sp 00 lstreet.com/threads/nexsys-motorsport-n54-ignition-coil-upgrade-kit.7170/ Coil testing https://www.sp 00 lstreet.com/threads/ignition-coil-secondary-spark-energy-comparison-n54-n55-b58-and-pr.7169/unread MHD will(or already does, confirmed by jyamona) have a check box for this new aftermarket option |

Hopefully the new plugs fix the issue. If not, looking into a coil solution. I like the b58 option, but damn that an expensive route, hence why i was looking into the precision raceworks option or something similar. |

PR coil kit didn't net me any improvements at 25+psi on upgraded twins. Neither drivability, idle, nor power. They look cool I guess. If you keep getting misfires or limp mode, I'd advise looking elsewhere first. You can always swap coils between cylinders as well to prove if it's a bad coil.

I would have done $300, def not $600+. I have read that it usually does help, and have seen dynos to prove it. But everyone's car is different, and if you're not pushing it it's def not worth it.

Any idea what power/torque level the standard Eldor/Delphi coils can handle?

I’m not sure if you have an msd80 or 81 ecu, but for what it’s worth, PR coils are dumb coils. Meaning they still use the internal ignition drivers in the ecu. Have you looked into bimmerlife coils? They use Audi/vw coil packs which are smart coil packs, meaning the driver is integrated directly into the coil. This can take a load off the ecu. People go back and forth on them, but I love my bimmerlife kit. Plus OEM vw/Audi coils are cheap.

I got mine for $100 from someone with a blown motor. I'm mhd 2 plus. At my stage they make no difference they just last longer and look good under your hood

ELDOR COILS! ELDOR COILS! ELDOR COILS!
DOES IT GET ANY BETTER THAN ELDOR COILS??? I may lose my mind if I see another thread ruined by the constant Eldor coil infomercial. Weisdorfenshmirtz, are you getting a kick back for all these absurd endorsements?

You need to get a custom tune, not sure why you would run an ots map with pure 600's.
It all depends on your tune. Some tuners like to make power by upping the boost with not a lot of timing advance and running bit rich to avoid detonation. Good tuners know how to balance timing advance and boost to get the most efficient power out of the engine. For example say on pure 600's you can probably hit 500 WHP 2 ways, 25 PSI and 5 degrees of timing, or 23 PSI with around 9 degrees of timing. Considering all things equal such as mods and octane. To me running more advance timing allows the engine to be more efficient in power production as you typically can run a bit leaner compared to just upping the boost. So yes Eldor coils are good for around 600 WHP, but in my opinion probably not running a high degree of timing advance. It get's to a point with the "stock" style coils where it can't keep up with high amounts of timing and boost. For refence I'm on stage 2's with PR coils on 95 octane, 21 PSI and 8 degrees of timing advance and dyno'd 482 WHP and 500 WTQ and according to my tuner there's still some room to grow, but I'd rather have some reliability and safety than push it to it's max limit. with eldor coils I started getting timing corrections around 8 degrees. In short for stock turbo's no PR coils are not worth it, for those with upgraded turbo's it all depends. Last edited by ErvGotti; 03-19-2021 at 11:12 AM.. |
