I'm thinking about upgrading to an LSD, just read an article about 2008+ 3ers having an eLSD, and 2006/2007 have an open diff. I got an 08 328i any information on this would be great!

It is not an LSD per se but an open differential which in its nature, always tries to send power to the wheel with the least resistance which is well, the one with the least traction.

What BMW tried to do here is to have the DSC brake the wheel that's spinning the most (least resistance) and cause it to have more resistance to turn than the wheel that isn't spinning so power is sent to that wheel, it isn't an LSD because you're braking the wheels to control power going to them instead of controlling where the differential sends power through the differential itself without slowing you down.

The way I look at it is this... old time bmws had mechanical LSD and were known for great handling.

Then in the E90 gen bmw implemented the eLSD... while they kept the mechanical LSD in all the M cars.

So ask yourself, if their eLSD was wonderful why would they have never used it in the M cars...

Just a cheaper solution for those they feel will never push the limits of the vehicle. Economics.

So you don’t think the M engineers would have substituted the cheaper option if it did the job? They do have Bean Counters at M Division also, like the same ones who stopped Albert Bierman from using the DCT in the F90 M5.

For the record it seems like some implementations of an eLSD can do a great job. Like Mclaren has been using them instead of mechanical ones. But the ones in the standard range bmws are not at that level.

I think mechanical is mechanical, and in an enthusiast car, its more of a guarantee/desire. They can add electronic dampening (call it programming) to any car with or without a mechanical diff. So they could heighten with more electronic nannies the controllability of the ///M while eliminating the cost and warranty implications of a more complicated diff.

But same reason that while most car fleets are getting rid of the manual gearboxes, the enthusiast models still readily have them. That's the desire of that profile. I think there was an article recently about the drivability of a Porsche and how people love the stick (even though its slower). DCT (though maybe with a finite lifespan) is way faster/efficient than mortal ability.

Above all that, ///M tech has always lagged behind a generation. Hence the continuance of the E46 ///M during the E90 era and the E90 ///M in the very beginning of the F series. I would say the F series came up pretty quick though...albeit with a bit more grenades.

Was that the dealer installed “M Performance” LSD?
