Dorman vs BMW
I'm piggybacking on your post. But I am as well in the process of replacing my VANOS solenoid. OEM are around 150$ on FCP or Ebay, and Dorman are around 60$. I have heard mixed reviews about Dorman, but their pricing is very competitive. Are they a BMW supplier?

I went the gates option on rockauto they seem to be a reputable manufacturer. I usually by from FCP but they didn't have an OE option just the OEM and didn't want to spend 300 for both. I'm also doing the rb pcv valve and oil change at the same time.
I did a VCG replacement last week and my car is now throwing all sorts of vanos code. I have a feeling I got some contiminats under the VC :-( |

It seems the Gates solenoids did the trick. I installed them earlier today and I dont have anymore vanos codes. I also did an oil change at the same time and replaced my PCV Valve with the RB version. Drove the car for a good 30 minutes. So far so good.
I will say the build quality is not as good as the OEM's. They just didnt look as refined. The finish on the steel sleeve didnt look as well put together as the originals. But as long as they work I'm not complaining I got two for less than the price of one OEM. The question is will they last 120K like the oem's?

These are not ebay Solenoids Gates is an OEM manufacture for a lot of cars. If you look up the manufacture they have a very good reputation for qualify products. I'm completely fine with my decision.
