Easiest Way to Measure Boost?

I need something I can measure boost with, just periodically...I don’t want to install a permanent gauge.

Is there something relatively cheap I can buy and plug into the odb-II port?

Basically, I want to verify my Dinan stage 2 is making the 13.2 PSI boost it should.

You can get the MHD app and buy the monitoring app for like $50 I think it is. You'll need an DCAN cable and adapter for your phone or the bluetooth obd adapter

Only 13psi at stage 2? You should be using MHD for more than logging...

No doubt, but this tune has been installed for 10 years. All this stuff wasn’t around back in 2010, so I worked with what I had at the time. Dinan was the safest option to keep warranty. Now I just want to make sure it’s still there. I’d put any tune on at this point with no hesitation, but the Dinan is on it.

That’s like $85 now and you need an android tablet and I don’t have cables. That’s going to be closer to $200 to get all that.

Any other way?

If you just want it to measure boost it periodically to check, don't install a permanent boost gauge, but instead, buy some feet of vacuum line and a T, enough to go from underhood at the intake manifold connection (where diverter valve are connected) to driver by the window and a basic boost gauge.. everything should be around 25$.

It's worth it if you plan on tuning.

Do you have a smart phone? MHD is available for IOS and android now. Don't be a cheap ass. It's worth having the tools for this car.

Do you not have a cell phone? I paid $15 for my K+DCAN cable and haven't ever had a problem with it. So more like $100 is easily attainable. But yeah, if you only plan on ever checking boost, this solution might be overkill. But goodness, it sounds like you're wanting to check boost to confirm you're getting the performance you should get, and if that's the case, it makes all the sense in the world to get the monitoring license from MHD so you can quickly check dozens of parameters to make sure everything with your tune is happy. It would also be very easy and affordable to upgrade to a more powerful tune at this point through MHD.

But if you just want a mechanical boost gauge, consider this one I put together for $10. It's calibrated for exactly 13.2 PSI

I didn’t realize it worked with iPhone. Which DCAN cable do y’all recommend?

OK, I’m convinced. Can I just buy this and download the monitoring license on my iPhone and I’m set?

My 335i has coded LCI taillights. Will these flashes erase that info and bring back the bulb check errors? Or does it only touch engine mapping and light codes are separate?

Well if youre just getting the monitoring module it doesnt touch tuning or anything. It simply reads what the engine is doing.
Tuning only affects the engine it doesnt mess with what you have coded.

What if I eventually want to flash to MHD map 1+ or something? Would that not touch the taillight coding? I remember the taillights were coded using the FRM, but I’m not super familiar with this stuff obviously.

My car also has a Dinan stage 2 tune...does that mean I have to remove that first? If I flash back to stock, does that again just change to the stock mapping for engine and not touch my coded lights?

Yeah, flashing a tune will not mess with your coded lights. No worries there. And you wouldn't need to remove your old tune to flash a new one. It will simply overwrite it.

Thanks. Do you actually use MHD? Any thoughts on which tune is better? Dinan Stage 2 versus the MHD stage 1+?

I have a FMIC and Cobb catback, but no Downpipes.

Are you looking for more power? MHD will offer you more power/performance but if youre happy with the dinan tune and performance out of the car there isnt a real reason to upgrade unless you either, like i said want more performance or want to take advantage of some of the newer features available through MHD

I've used MHD stage 2+ and didn't really have any complaints. I'm not currently using it because I wanted to be able to modify my tune and learn how to tinker with that kind of thing a bit. MHD tunes are locked, but so are most others. As far as how MHD Stage 1+ compares to Dinan Stage 2, I'm not sure. All I know is that Dinan is a dinosaur and MHD is actively being updated and has lots of features. If I were you, I wouldn't be afraid to try the MHD Stage 2 map pack. The FMIC is a whole lot more important of a requirement than downpipes.

I think I’ll just pay the $300 for a super license so I have monitoring and try a couple maps. I’ve gotten my use out of the dinan and it seems newer stuff is better anyway.

With the WiFi adapter, do I need to plug into a trickle charger just in case?
