Cracking Front Passenger Speaker: NOT a blown speaker

Car Info:
2010 E90 LCI 335d
Base Audio
CIC iDrive
Bavsound Stage 1 Speakers

The Issue:
My front passenger side door speaker cracks when there is bass-heavy music. It's only that one speaker. This issue was present with the stock speaker as well as the bavsound speaker. I even swapped around the bavsound speakers but the issue persists.

The cracking is dependent on bass amount and volume. If the music has little bass but is turned up, the speaker cracks. If it has a lot of bass and is turned down, there is mild cracking. As I turn the volume up the cracking gets worse. If the bass is low and volume is low it won't crack(or at least it isn't totally obvious) and I can enjoy my music

This issue is independent of the door. I held the speaker in my hand with the door card off and it still cracked.

The kicker here is I have tried installing and uninstalling an Avin iDrive unit, and have had to pull the head unit as well as the idrive screen about 3 times. I'm thinking one of those times I just didn't fully seat a connection and that's why this issue appears.

Anyone have any ideas about where to look for broken wires, bad connections, or similar? I'm hoping since it's only limited to the passenger door speaker and nothing else it shouldn't be a huge problem.

P.S. When people say "head unit", is that the iDrive screen, or is it the box where those preset buttons and CD player are? This has always confused me.

Any ideas? Sadly I've ruled out it being a blown speaker. Gonna be more complicated than that.

Often a hard cracking sound will be due to a connection point that is too weak to carry the power to the speaker. The crack sound occurs when the connection goes out then quickly comes back in play.

Sounds like it's time to start tracing wires.

My 2010 did exactly this as well but only when I had a window open. Never figured out why.

Any hints on how to fix/what to replace? I have no problems chasing wires.

My problem happens with windows up, but is 10x worse with the windows or just one window down.

"Base audio" I thought was the normal way to describe it. 2 front door speakers, 2 rear shelf speakers, 2 underseat subwoofers, no amplifier.

You are correct I didn't read carefully before
opening my mouth. Are you turning it up a lot
before this starts to happen the base system doesn't
have much power it could be distorting . You could try sound
insulation but if you like a good stereo in your car you
should consider and upgrade like maybe the bimmertech
helix 82 dsp or one of the solutions from this board.
Base system in these is a POS even the next level up the Hi Fi is not very good for 50k car.

No worries. I just figured I was wrong. I'm new to audio.

With the windows up I have to turn it up pretty high. With the windows down it happens at extremely low volumes.

I plan on amping this system and installing new underseat subs eventually, but I want to fix this door speaker problem first.

I figured if it was distortion it would happen to all 4 speakers, or at least the 2 front speakers.

If is sounds like a mechanical rattle you need to go in and look for it . Sound deadening might help.
Have you tried to press on the door panel when this is happening to see if you can stop it?
Swap speakers or try another .(kind of a lot of work to move from side to side though)

Doesn't seem to be a mechanical rattle. It is within the speaker. I've had it happen with the speaker not even mounted to the door. It but it's not a blown speaker.

I actually did swap the speakers from side to side. The problem doesn't move with one speaker. It is limited to that door, regardless of what speaker is there. So not a blown speaker. Wiring/connection problem. Happened on the stock speaker and 2 Bavsound speakers.

You could measure the speaker resistance at the Head Unit
connector. From after that is leaves the head Unit.
In the base system the floor speakers are wired in parallel
with the floors.

If you could somehow drive the speakers from another source other than the head unit it might tell you something.

Hi was this ever resolved? I have the same issue and I have upgraded all the speakers, added two amps and I had base audio prior. Specific to the engine being on and bass and volume turned up
