Robbing the e92 M3 for suspension parts

The e92 M3 has more than just a few parts that are similar to 335i. The bushing kit by Dinan is nothing more than a M3 kit and I saw the M3 logo on the bushing and part number laser etched on the control arms. You can buy the part for your dealer and below are the part numbers.

Front control arms:

• LEFT TENSION STRUT WITH RUBBER MOUNTING 31102283575
• RIGHT TENSION STRUT WITH RUBBER MOUNTING 31102283576

Rear sub-frame:

• RUBBER MOUNTING FRONT – 33312283382 - Qty 2
• RUBBER MOUNTING REAR – 33312283383 - Qty 2

FWI, the front suspension on e92 is identical with e92 M3, as well as, 90% of the rear suspension. You can literally bolt on an M3 suspension and brakes ect. The only real difference between between cars is the rear track width which is minor and a LSD. This should be of no real surprise.

I measure up the M3 strut bar today and it should fit so I order the parts ( http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...61&hg=51&fg=75 ). This design is superior to any straight cross over bar from a mechanical stiffness point of view and much lighter. You need ever part of the RealOEM listed page and for item #6 you need the 12 mm bolt.

The strut bar will fit just as you get all of the parts needed.
Harold has done this.
I was thinking of doing this but I already got the BMW Performance Strut bar.
It fits fine over my AFE.

sorry for the newbie question but you're saying we can swap the zsp suspension (springs and shocks) for the e92 m3 ones? I might be interested in doing this if its really possible

Does the M3 strut brace fit even with the OEM BMW airbox on the 335i ???

That is not an issue at all. The bar is not routed from tower to tower.

I see from RealOEM that it looks like it follows the normal path, from tower to bulkhead, then back to the other tower. Is it a direct bolt-on replacement to the insubstantial 335i braces and does it fit in the current routing/channels?? If so, it will probably be worth doing as in the diagram it seems so much more substantial.

Incidentally, the post above in which you mention use of the M3 front wishbones, you are just talking about replacing the wishbone linkages, am I right?? Are they much firmer than the standard bushing on the 335i (I haven't had a good look at the suspension setup of our cars yet) ??

I measured up the bar side by side at the dealer today it a direct bolt one so I went ahead and order it. Mr 5 said someone had done this already so it confirmed it will fit but I take photo once it is installed. From enginerring point of view this brace will stiffen the tower alot with very little material.

The wishbone on the 335i uses a hydraulic isolator…..this means slop city. The rear sub frame isolators are hydraulic as well. The wishbones on e92 M3 bolts on to 335i and the bushing are much stiffer. There is absolutely nothing different about the front suspension geometry between the two cars. Dinan has a bushing kit that has these parts and I was able to see the part number on the control arm today and they do match. The whole Dinan bushing kits are from a BMW e92 M3 and that is why I listed them. BTW, I have the wishbone on my car already and 4 other parts as well and doing the rear isolators next week.

The only other real bad part on the car is the shock rubber top mounts which deflect up to 20 mm under load. I did some testing in the lab and they are horror show (super soft so you loss negative camber close to the limit) and will absolutely induce under steer with anything other than the stock springs.

Which four other parts ?? And is it just the rearmost isolators on the rear subframe that you are doing, because on RealOEM I counted maybe eight rubber support mounts

Can you list the part numbers which you are doing?

The ones that matter in the rear are the following and the other are the same for sub frame so no point in changing them. I changed out some of the rear links but they are same bushings so it was a waste...trial and error.

• RUBBER MOUNTING FRONT – 33312283382 x2
• RUBBER MOUNTING REAR – 33312283383 x2

Don't do an aftermarket rear brace if you do the rear bushing. Most people think the rear brace stiffen the car but it does almost nothing other than acting like a spring for the sub frame bushings. That is why the M3 has no brace because it is not needed.

The control arms are 100.00 each and the rear bushing are 40.00 each. Use the part numbers i listed in the first post.

The brakes don't bolt on and the m3 uses a different spindle. I was hoping to do this but it has already been tried and confirmed not to work.

so the bushings are for the rear only? can you have them pressed into your stock rear arms or do you need to purchase new ones?

Do you have any idea if the same trades can be done between E90 and E90 M3?
Just curious

E90 M3 strut tower brace, all the parts cost about 300.00. Already ordered from Tischer but is on back order.

I am glad you are mentioning this and putting it out for the public to see Orb. I went to the dealer recently to look at the suspension components for the M3, and aside a very few minor differences, its all the same.. There are a few things that look different and have the "M" stamp on them, but they are no different than the 335's components. It seems like BMW just redid the part in a different material just because its an M.

The front end is basically the same as you mentioned. Someone also mentioned the front hub spindles are different, and they are, but its not an advantageous difference aside from a very minor difference in unsprung weight. Due to the spindle difference, the caliper is mounted a little lower than the 335's caliper, but its a negligible difference as far as COG and gain go.
The dealership dude was looking at me like, wtf is he doing. Haha.

Great info nonetheless bro and great job!

I wonder when Dtec will release a bushing set for the E9x's. They make some good custom stuff as far as bushings go.

So does the rear differential from an M3 fit on a 335?

No it does not.

Is it possible? Yes, but not as easy as the other stuff. With that said, anything is possible. Mounting differentials is not the hardest thing to do.

I'd really like to see how that m3 strut tower brace fits in the E90 over our airbox and stuff. If so, I want to install this mod.

It doesn't go over the engine. It runs just like the stock brace, from the tower to the bulkhead then to the other tower. Its just a stronger unit. And rather than connecting to just one of the three strut tower bolts, it bolts up to all three.

Interesting thread..... let me add a noob question to it:

The M3 has flared fenders, which I always thought was to accommodate a wider track. Where does the wider track come from? The suspension or just wheel width and offset?

From this conversation I'm guessing it's from the wheels since it sounds like the suspension is the same regarding control arm lengths and such.
