Why would they make the holder green on the Gas Cap?

This kinda bugs me, why use the green on the Gas Cap Holder? Here in the states, at the gas station, the green handle is diesel.

Now it doesn't confuse me, but why would they even create the possibility for someone to get confused. Using the same color coded for diesel?

Green is petrol.
Black is diesel.

Because people are dumb. If it's black, it would blend in and people won't know it's there. Then the paint gets scratched because they just let it dangle.

The green holder makes people look at it and wonder why there's a green thingy there. And then they see the green tip on the fuel cap and hopefully it clicks in their mind that they should go together.

Also, diesel nozzles won't fit into the fuel filler on a gas car.

Just the tip.

Although I think they changed it to all black on newer model years.

There have been many mis fueling stories by people in the diesel world who assumed the green handle at the pump was diesel. There is no such standard. The standard color to identify diesel containers is actually yellow in the US.

Dude, if that's all you have to worry about is the color of the plastic of the gas cap stem...

Good for ya.

I thought it was pretty genius, in an Ikea-explaining-things-without-words kind of way.

Green thing sticks in green thing dumbass. Don't let your cap dangle like a monster. Be civilized.

Around here, yellow handles are E85. I believe the Flex Fuel gas caps are yellow as well.

That is correct, but an actual diesel container is yellow. The only reason diesel/e85 is a different color is so people don't use them accidentally. No standard colors, and nothing says they can't all be black.

Also, how is this a real thread and why did i respond? Only thought is it's like staring at a wreck, you just can't help it.

Diesel is also yellow. I've also seen E85 in green and blue before.. I think as long as it's not black, they can be any color.
