You serious Bro? How many refrigerators can you buy with 40% of $50k? Also, refrigerators are used for at least a decade, whereas most people don't keep cars for more than 5+/- years. It's a completely different magnitude of loss. I don't take resale into consideration when buying cars, but it's moronic to compare how much you lose on a ~$1k refrigerator vs a $50k car.

It's one thing to not really care much about depreciation, it's completely something else not to acknowledge that the amount of loss isn't small.

some people would rather daily an M3 and put 20k miles a year on it. and keep repeating the cycle with one M3 after the next. Some people would rather put 5k miles a year on it and drive a cheap beater to work... and upgrade to a 911 in a few years. I know this example is extreme, but there is no denying that having a cheap daily saves money in the long run.

And another thing is that when you daily something a lot, it loses its luster and doesn't feel fast anymore. DD'ing my civic all week and then getting into my stock f80 feels like I'm jumping into warp drive.

Beaters don't mean shit car. It just means that it a car that's more suitable for daily driving. If you owned a La Ferrari you wouldn't be driving it everyday especially if you are commuting through heavy traffic. Driving is supposed to be enjoyable, I couldn't agree more. In traffic, a nice 5 series cushy sedan is more fun than most supercars. I don't find my M3 to be as "fun" in traffic as my i3. There is more to driving than just going fast.

Exactly. Driving my i3 all week makes me look forward to the M3 CS. Those days I'm in traffic in the M3 CS make me miss the adaptive cruise and seating position in my i3.

Yes, I'm serious. The order of magnitude is the same in percent of purchase price.

2000 Honda Accord 5 speed, learned how to drive stick in this thing. I will have owned her for a decade next summer, she's at 160k miles now and I've been looking around for a replacement recently but she still has so much life left. Best $3100 I've ever spent.

All the N54 problems & worries go away when you have a second vehicle and can do most of the wrenching yourself.

Edit: One of the cars I'm considering is the X1 35i, anyone have any experience here? I need to bring my 335is in for a recall so I'm hoping they have a X1 35i loaner I could try for the day.

Ah, I'm not so sure about that. I think it depends on the commute. So I live 80 miles from my office. The commute is from a rural area into Northern Virginia. The roads out near the house are in the (small) mountains West of DC where they follow rivers and trace over the landscape, really excellent roads. And then part of the commute is Route 66 and Route 28 which are super-slab parking lots at rush hour.

I've been driving my E90, wheezy old 325i with 215 hp, for almost 12 years now on this commute. 300,000+ miles. 20 hours seat time a week. I have to say I still enjoy driving the car. 4 years ago I added a 3.0si Z4 Coupe to my fleet and drive it once or twice a week. Even after adding that car, did not dull the enjoyment I have with the E90. At least twice a week I put the E90 away wet and steaming; that's if I think the deer will let get away with it.

Before the E90, I had a '89 E30 325i. I never lost enjoyment of driving that one either. My wife owns a '97 Z3 M44. I commute in it once and a while. We've had that car 22 years this month. Slow as an old hunting dog, but drop the top and open it up on the back roads on a nice day, it's still worth the price of the admission ticket. In 2013 I had an F30 335i (auto) for a week as a loaner. Drove it over 800 miles on my commute. Far much more power than my N52, but I found the car boring and sloppy on the back roads.

A classic BMW on the right road is just a good combination. You can only go so fast off the track. I'd rather daily drive an old BMW and incur the expense any day over a JDM (and I drove 1st-gen Integra for 230,000 miles in the early '90s)

I've always said when people ask me if owning a BMW is expensive. My reply is "Yes, because you need a second car for all the times when the BMW is in the shop."

I also run an E46 330ci which I've owned for nearly 7 years. It was bought as a cheap project, so while it looks it's age and has covered over 180,000 miles its still a nice drive.

Plus, I don't worry about parking.

Been running the z4 as a daily for 5 years now. Just broke down this winter and picked up a 2013 S4 to deal with the snow...miss driving the z4 and it's only been a few weeks.

Exactly. I drive 138 miles one way in So Ca to work. My beaters are my 13' 328i and 4.8is X5. The rest stay in the garage much of the time.

My 128 is likely my last car and I love it and want to keep it rust free so it sits every winter. I marshall at 2 winter car rallies so really need AWD and snow tires.
2012 Suzuki SX4, AWD & 6MT and it's a hatchback (aka station wagon). I like driving it.
And every time I put out the garbage in the garage, I see a very clean sedona 128 waiting for all the snow/salt to go away. Deltran green light shining on wall.

I split my daily now between the Z4 and E90. 2 days Z4, 3 days E90. I got the Z4 for my "loaner" when the E90 is in the shop... my shop.

advantages of a DD....

1) parking
2) no worry if it gets dinged or accident
3) keep the miles low on your other cars so you enjoy them for many years
4) lowering the wear & tear on your other cars
5) lower miles = lower insurance $
6) don't have to worry about driving in shitty weather
7) no haters at work or explain why you have an expensive car
8) save $ on gas - DD typically get better MPG and uses 87 octane.

I like having a daily because I get tired of cars (no matter what it is). Also I look forward to driving the M after a couple of days in my 2000 Civic Si.

Commute went from 30 miles/day to 150 so the $7k running costs of my e90 turned into a running cost of $3k in a 02 corolla

After two years and 100k miles the corolla went kaput so I took my wife's ct200h.

I'm a firm believer in driving the wheels off cars so I would get a Giulia QV for a split-daily if I could trust it to get out of the neighborhood everyday.

Otherwise looks like a MKV Supra is in my near future if it's any good.

I'm going to try that now that the weather is improving, but knowing myself I'm sure I'll be driving the z all week long and pushing the s4 on my wife. S4 is the perfect do everything daily if snow is a concern but it's a fat dsg turd when compared to my normal dancing partner.

Show off your extra beater car | here's mine....

Share your extra beater if you have one too.

Mine is a 2002 Mazda Protégé powered by a robust 2.0, normally aspirated 4 cyclinder producing a crazy strong 130HP. While the car is mechanically perfect it does have a few cosmetic flaws – two interior door handles have fallen off, the center stack (radio etc has gone out, it works but you can't tell what station you are on) the front passenger window is presently taped so as to not fall back down into the door, paint is peeling off and it has a dents and dings that have gone unrepaired.

I inherited the car from my Aunt a couple years back and it is a great grocery getter (doesn't matter where you park you don't even have to lock it), dog hauler, wheel, tire and parts fetcher and is the perfect car to teach a teen to drive in without fear of them damaging wheels, bumpers or fenders. I drive it about once a week locally around Huntington Beach it's the perfect incognito mobile no one pays any attention to you however merging into traffic has to be planned well in advance and regularly getting cut off is just par for the course.

We have affectionately named it the Mazdaratti (RoadKill) and I am very tempted to put an M badge on it.

So there's mine – share yours
