Greatly Appreciate any input.

Those two parts can only go one way. See that notch on the bottom of the first picture? Now look at the second picture, see that piece of metal sticking out? They go together.

Thanks a lot. I almost did it myself since my steering wheel is off center. Now I will have the dealer do it for me.

Best Regards,

As long as you have the sports steering wheel to start with, you can reuse your airbag.

The front faceplate? You will if you just ordered the wheel itself. If you want the perfect match, there is one specific to the wheel that is a little more angled than the current sport wheel.

The front plate from the sport wheel does come pretty close though. I had the regular sport plate on for close to two months. I still have mine collecting dust now...

I think Mark is talking about the metal rear plate that the faceplate screws into and where the airbag snaps into. I think he will need a new metal plate. The Non ZSP airbag is shaped differently so it may require a new mounting plate. Plus since he needs new buttons, I'd imagine he's going to need the new plate to secure the bottons.

But it doesnt hold the airbag unit in place. I assumed he was talking about the front faceplate.

I have not seen the backplate for the non-sport wheel, so I couldnt tell you about that... You will need to get new buttons...

So no dice with the M Tech wheel on a non ZSP car without spending $1200 in parts huh.

Oh well at least the shifter looks nice.

Who is this Swedish dealer?

Guys

In this thread there has been reference to a good Swedish dealer for parts - who is this? is he on ebay or somewhere else?

Also - has anybody got a dealer to supply and fit? Any problems getting a dealer to do this?

Thanks

How can you post in the DIY asking how much it would the dealer charge for an install??? DO IT YOURSELF... Its the whole reason why I spent all the time writing it...

You can buy the wheel on ebay...

Chill out man. You did a great job on the DIY tutorial, it's just I'm not the kind of guy that does DIY installs on a $40K+ car. Nevertheless, again, great DIY tutorial.

Hmmm. Still not convinced the M-Sport Steering Wheel is worth the $200 over the SP Steering Wheel that came with my 330i. Anyone who has the M-Sport wheel want to convince me?

So the M-Sport wheel is the one found in the M3, right? I'm thinking I could stop by my local BMW dealership and sit in an M3 and try out the steering wheel.

As you can see, I had the post Sept. 2005 330i ZSP steering wheel, but decided to upgrade to the M-Sport steering wheel. The M-sport steering wheel has the same "general" dimensions as the post-Sept. ZSP one; however, as I had posted in a previous thread with pics, the M-sport grip is thicker. You can best see this in the photos I took from outside the car pointing to the side of the steering wheel. The M-sport one is also softer and padded better. By comparison, the stock ZSP wheel feels like hard plastic (instead of a cushy grip). I love the minor mod, because it is a subtle touch for a near 50K car that brings just a bit more luxury and sport to driving--which is exactly why I got a BMW 3-series to begin with.

Took me about 45 mins for the install thanks to these great DIY instructions. It would have been easier had I waited for daylight, because of my poorly lit garage.

A few extra pointers: Be careful with the clips. Be patient, don't force anything. Like Bavarian said, to pop the airbag out, insert and push the screwdriver straight in (parallel to the firewall). This retracts wire-like "clips," which release the plastic tabs holding in the airbag. Don't worry, the clips stay on the steering wheel, and won't pop off. Regarding the two clips that go into the airbag unit. To remove these, I gently inserted a small flathead screwdriver on the metal portions of the clip sides (i.e., 90 degrees from where the wire goes into the clips). I then gently lifted the metal portion of the clip and voila--the plastic clip releases on that side; repeat this on the opposite side of the clip and pop it off.

If the experiences of other e90 owners is not enough for you then I dont know what else to say. I'm not here to validate my purchases to anyone, just sharing what I have done.

I think it's a little funny that you purchased a $40K plus car are pondering a great deal over $200. The M-wheel lists for around $549.00 or so at the dealer. $185 plus shipping is a great deal.

You cannot go to the dealer and sit in a M3 to see this wheel in person, as the M3 is not out yet, duh? Find someone in your area that has already purchased this and you can get a firsthand look. People in Europe have access to the M-Sport line as an option, thats where these parts are coming from, not from a current M3.

Danny

ZuerstBMW, I live in Clearwater. Would you mind if I came over to your place or if we met somewhere when you get the M-Sport wheel so I can just see it and put my hands on it? That's really the only way I think I'll be able to make a decision.

Let me know!

I find it funny that you can manipulate the hell out of a 5-series IDrive knob for usage in the 3-series (..all while claiming not to "mod" 40K+ vehicles), but are/were having difficulty when considering this relatively easy mod. You are an eccentric one.
