2008 E90 328i Pad FMSI Template Info

Perhaps useful information, I am posting it because I found it confusing when trying to determine the correct pads for my car.

First off, the 2008 E90 has larger front brakes than the 2006-2007, so that is something to watch out for. The 335 and M3 also have different brakes than the 328i for obvious reasons.

Secondly, when I received Hawk Pads HPS pads for my car, they had piston clips on the outer front pads. However Hawk lists that pad for this car HB551F-748. Grinding off the clip did work. I had the pads out for an HPDE without killing myself.

But, after some research, I discovered some manufacturers sell you Friction Materials Standards Institute (FMSI) template D918A (the A means no clip - so Hawk is selling D918 template pads) front and template D1170 rear. For example, look up this car in the Cool Carbon application chart and you'll get their part number D918nc and D1170. They seems to fit (as my Hawk pads did), but are not the exact specified part for the car. The correct FMSI template numbers are D1260A for the front and D1267 for the rear. There are manufacturers that use these correct templates for building brakes for this car.

we checked with Cool Carbon regarding your comments and received the following response:

FMSI is an aftermarket organization that assigns part number from information submitted by any of a number of aftermarket manufacturers. The
goal is to cross reference against OE part numbers and possibly European part numbers. Generally the FMSI information is fairly accurate but not
perfect. It is only as accurate as the information submitted and was created to provide a cross referencing service to aftermarket manufacturers. FMSI provides minimal information with respect to dimensions and none with respect to piston clips and noise shims. Basically height, width and overall thickness along with a sketch as to shape.

Cool Carbon assigned the D918 NC designation meaning 'no clip' on the outboard pad - as Cool Carbon introduced this application prior to FMSI
recognizing the difference and assigning the D918A designation. Generally the FMSI assignment of an A to the part number is in reference to an overall thickness difference.

The D1260 and the D918 are identical with respect to backing plates. The D1260 uses a piston clip that is only very slightly smaller in diameter than
that used on the D918. The D1260 is much lower in volume as compared to the D918. The D918 piston clip works fine in both applications and is actually the best solution for both varieties.

There are some that call this a D918 and other manufactures that call this a D1260 but you are looking at the same part for all issues of functionality.

With respect to the D1267, Cool Carbon uses the D1171, ( not D1170), as the only difference is a slight profile difference on one of the backing
plates. Again the D1267 is a very low volume application and the piston clip specified is the same for both part numbers

(Note: The D1170 is approximately 14mm greater in height than the D1171 and would affect braking bias if it could be made to fit)

The correct applications are as follows:

The E9x 328i (2008 from 09/07 ) uses the D918NC front and the D1171 rear

The E9x 335i uses the D918 front and the D1170 rear.

The E9x M3 uses the D918 front and the D919 rear.

Cool Carbon welcomes any questions regarding applications and fit -

Yes, D1171 for the rear, typo on my part. And thanks for the additional info. I was thinking about Cool Carbon for my next set of pads when I need them. I hear good things about them.

Sorry to dig up an ancient post, but I was researching some on the brake pad FMSI numbers and found this post informative. My question would be are we absolutely sure the D1260 and D918 pads and backing plates are of the same dimensions?

I ask this because I've used OE, Akebono, Cool Carbons, and Jurid pads at this point and myself and others have only had issues with D918 pads making a slight clunk when going forward to reverse and visa versa. I realize that I have a limited sample size but can't help but wonder if I'm onto something. Or perhaps it has nothing to do with FMSI numbers at all and is just an issue with certain batches or manufacturers.

OE D1260front / D1267rear - no issues
Akebono D918front / D1267rear - slight clunk on one of front brake pads
Cool Carbon D918front / D1171rear - slight clunk on one of front brake pads
Jurid D1260front / D1267rear - no issues
I have tried swapping the D918 pads from left to right and the clunk will move with the pad. I have also tried changing out the brake caliper carrier entirely and the issue will still stay with the pad.
