Got mine back after a day or so at a different stealers than normal.

I asked them specifically to look at throttle potentiometer.
Also told them that the fault now seems to happen in damp or rainy conditions.

They checked the puma dB and found the exact symptoms described as being fixed in a new software update. They were suprised that it hadn't been loaded back in Oct when I had my last stealer visit.

An automatic update was done and also a manual update (whatever that means). I was shown the TSB's which describes my problem to the tee.

It stated that it it isn't necessary to change any components!

The old version was 28 and is now a modded progman29 as per TSB's. It looks like a software bug as been causing the idling problem.

The manual update fixes the rough idling and the auto update fixes the engine revving on its own at idle.

The stealer was quite open in explaining in what had been done. I shall now have to wait and see if it has made any difference. I will keep you informed.

Paul, Topaz & Nic please let me know how you get on with your si

Thanks for the info ShereKhan!

I will try to twist my dealers arm regarding the software update. I hoped that they had done it when it was out last, but they did´nt.

We will see what happens, thanks again.

The car is going in for a Radio swap to BMW Proffesionel instead of Business, and a full software update next month...

Time will tell if it does something for the rough idle...

Eh?

I have professional as standard here in the UK - I thought it was the same for all 320si's.

My fault doesn't seem to have gone away - just done 1k miles last week and it's still there - it will have to wait for service (due in 800miles). Also have a wheel tracking problem - Car seems to tramline all over the place.

Business is standard here in Denmark.

Uk models get a lot more equipment than we do.

Standard price on a 320si in Denmark is about 48.000£ Mine would be around 51.000£
And the Proffesional upgrade is 600£

So thats why the general carpark i Denmark is pretty old...

Yeah.... My stomach hurts when I see what the cars costs in The UK.

But it has always been like this in Denmark, so Im used to it. Many Danes move to our neighbour-country Sweden where cars and houses costs much less.

I think they also have a good social security service too (from what I have heard).

Yes, the social security system is very good in the Nordic countries. We pay almost 50% in tax

Just when I thought my si was sorted, finished work on Monday and pulling out onto main road engine malfunction amber light came on together with engine revs topping out at 2000rpm, a few hundred yards further had ETC and Abs lights on. Was recovered to home then BMW transported car to my dealership next morning. Most of the morning spent waiting for a loan car (no complaints a Merc E class). 3 days later and I have it back with new engine wiring harness together with December's original hesitation problem around the 2000 to 2500rpm band.
If it wasn't for not having to reprogramme my phone into the car I would think they had also refitted my original ecu and version 26 software as its not reving as freely.
Garage says there is nothing else to change in the fault tree (except engine) so watch this space - mileage 31,000mls

I think I still like si but its getting harder to convince myself.

Hey Paul, sorry to hear it.

Mine has only covered 6.000km so I dont hope that I am as unfortunate as you...

Hope they find a cure real soon so that you can start to enjoy the car.

I had the powersteering pump replaced last time and now it has started to make strange noises again...

ShereKan- why don't you get our employer's leasing company on the case (if you haven't already). With their clout, your problems should get high priority. I am sure there is a BMW account manager who wouldn't like to see a major leasing company upset

So far i've found "our" lease company useful as a chocolate fireguard. They have no idea or clout other than getting me an appointment at the local stealer at short notice.

There are account managers for each business, I would get their name and start having a go (The FD's usually know whothey are unless you are the FD)

Here we go again

My engine has once again let me down. When I started her up this afternoon only 2 or 3 cylinders were running and there were a strong smell of burnt oil.
The car has covered 8.500 km

BMW SOS will pick it up in the morning and take the car to the garage.

Recently the exhaust has been rattling a lot and it has smelled a lot of unburned fuel.

Sad weekend...

Well chaps, after 10 months and 20,000 miles tried to part ex si against a new 120d M sport coupe and was offered not a lot by BMW. Took it to a Porsche dealership (who probably didn't know about 320si foibles) and was offered £1500 more against a used Boxster S. So two weeks ago I bade farwell to KY56HUH, a terrific car about 95% sorted in the engine running department. I really wanted to stick with BMW but on this occasion it wasn't to be, so a summer of softtop motoring 0-60 in 5.5 and same 31 mpg (that si 6th gear was really too short). Who ever buys HUH will find a slightly different exhaust trim and sound as I swapped the BMW oval for a twin tube Porsche 997s item.

Enjoy your si's a terrific beemer.

Cheers

Paul

320si fuel consumption

Hello guys,

I have had the si now for two months and I want to ask you a question. How are you doing in terms of mpg ? I have driven mine mostly in heavy city traffic but recently I went to a 500 km trip so I have a stat for mpg performance outside. The readings I have had have nothing to do with BMW's ratings.

For my 500 km trip I did about 25 mpg while my average city cile is around 17 mpg. I know that actual mpg has a lot to do with driving habbits but don't you think this is way out of BMW's suggestion of around 30 mpg ? Do you think I should go complain to the dealer and have the car checked?

Thank you very much

Best regards

George

I've done nearly 50k miles in mine now.

Aside of all the problems it is a good car.

I tend to get 31 mpg only if I drive at constant 70mph with cruise for a 200 mile trip. Overall I tend to get 27.7 mpg according to my calculations (brim to brim). If you are getting 17mpg you must be doing a lot stop start driving. Lowest I have had mine is 20mpg with only city driving.

Most of my driving is on Motorway.

Nic the nearest thrill (well what is allowed by my employer and insurance) is driving on the Autobahn. The engine just sounds great 110+ mph

I have done that on quite a few roundabouts - been practicing with all traction control off at the moment.
