Post your Photoshopped e90 Tail Light Variations

A lot of members have expressed their dislike for the rear tail light design, but to date, the only choices we have are stock and Blacklines.

If you have any ideas of styling variations within the constraints of the existing tail light lens shape, please post them.

I'm a novice at Photoshop, so here's my 30 second Smudge in an attempt to make the tail light design like the e60's. Please feel free to show me how it should be done.

I like your redesigns but I also like the original style. I think a redesign would probably also entail changing the shape but out of the ones you present, I like the bottom left and the original.

First one looks kind of 5-ish. Second looks like VW or Audi. Personally I don't mind the tails the way they are. Seems that all the variations lose the classic "L" shape.

I love the taillights the way they are, maybe the new coupe ones (off the 335 black spy shot) would be better but i love ours.

Variations? Look at 2 year old Tauruses, VW Passats and Kia Spectras. Very similar...

No surprise as all the car builders seem to use the same CAD software.

With that you are implying that all cars also look alike, which they dont.

What cad software you use has nothing to do with what color plastic you choose to use in what spot.

I believe most of us (me included) posting here are of the silent majority who are fine with the existing tail light design. Others are more ambivalent or indifferent. However, there is the more "vocal" minority that occasionally expresses discontent with the rear styling. The popularity of Blackline tail lights may reflect this also.

My image ideas above are examples of my truly poor Photoshop skills, yet are intended to encourage more talented members to post their ideas. For those of you who don't like the current design, what would you suggest? Ideas?

Design softwares are different for each OEM

Chrysler uses catia V5 ( designed by Dassault)
GM - Unigraphics
etc.

Some others are Solid works, solid edge, pro E, and a host of PLM / EDS parametric modeling products etc.

however the designs come to life in the clay studio where they go thru a conceptual design review for esthetics. The Cad work comes way down the road.

OK. We disagree on your first point (styling) but I agree that CAD software has nothing to do with color selection. <g>

Here is one thing I have always thought would look good. Just apply the blackline tail light but just to the inner clear lens. I.e. darken the white while leaving the outside tail light red. Essentially this is just the same as just installing the inner-most part of a black-line set.

I think that the reduced contrast with the SG would look very good. I have been thinking of it as a DIY (I'm too cheap to buy a blackline set and then just use 1/2 of it!!).

Now there's food for thought. I had thought of doing this the other way around (i.e. just changing the outer lens), but someone tried that a couple of weeks back & it didn't look right. I may try your idea, though

I was thinking about this the other night.

It is interesting that the lighted portion of the white part of our tail lights is actually a small triangular area. It is surrounded by a shiny metallic area that is accentuated by a white strip along the top and outer edges.

I like the taillight design on the right side. It differs from the oem ones in a subtle way.

Are the white line taillights available(yet) or is this a joke

I prefer the whitelines over the blacklines and the oem taillight I guess....
