E90 320D - Sluggish Acceleration followed by Breakdown
Hi all,
I noticed my car was acting sluggish when trying to accelerate and would take forever to pick up speed. It was also making a sort of whirring noise from the engine which scaled with the acceleration. While driving, the car broke down and I had to get it towed back to my home. After it was towed, the car stopped functioning completely. I cannot unlock/lock the car doors using the key fob and can only access it via the key blade. When I place the key fob into the car, the car doesn't response at all. There is no ignition, no lights, not a single thing to suggest it's responding to the key. Unfortunately because of this I can't even use my Carly app to try and read any error codes. Any ideas? Thanks for any help in advance. |

So I got the car checked and the battery had about 3V. This was replaced but the car still would not start however lights, ignition and stuff were working now.
Error codes were checked and got 3EC0,Camshaft sensor, 3EC1,Camshaft sensor - not too clear on this but intend to replace the camshaft sensor (all diy seem to only come up with a petrol car rather than diesel, not sure if this makes a difference). |

Hi all.
It seems my problem is a lot different than what I expected (see attached). I cleaned the EGR 9 months ago and the area looked nothing like this. It's all covered in dirt/carbon or whatever. I'm really not sure what's going on - this explains why the car was so sluggish in accelerating and eventually broke down but 1) How could this happen? 2) What are my options? Any help is appreciated. |

Looks like you have forgotten to fasten the clamp for the egr pipe where it connects to the egr valve, hence all the soot over the engine bay.

I definitely had everything clamped. I don't know if you noticed but the part the egr is connected to, there is a hole on the side - you can see the metal is shredded and looks like some sort of mini explosion that opened the piece up, allowing whatever to escape from it.

That looks like a jubilee clip not the proper clamp required. You will need to fit the correct clamp and repair the melted wiring loom. And your inlet manifold has melted which would need to be replaced. Could your leaking exhaust gas melted the loom causing a fire shorting out your battery and also melting your inlet manifold.

By the state of the wiring and general area around the joint between egr pipe and egr unit, looks like it's been leaking hot exhaust gases for a while which has been melting the plastics in that area.

To start I would repair your wiring loom, your crank sensor may be ok just disconnected due to your damaged loom. Replace your egr clamp and hopefully you be good to go. Last edited by criscarp; 03-07-2019 at 08:22 AM.. |

Agree with what Chris says, disconnect the battery and inspect the wiring loom. Definitely need a new inlet manifold. Take it all off and inspect everything for damage. Also take off the turbo outlet and see if the fan spins freely without play or noise. It's is possible something has come adrift and found its way into he turbo. |

Is there a hole right through the inlet manifold where the egr bolts on?? Does look very raggedy on the side. |
