It cost me $200 at a local muffler/brake place. If you live in an area where more shops exist (as I said earlier, this shop was my 3rd pick) then you may get a better price.

When he opened the driver-side muffler, there was no packing. I'm not sure if this is normal or not. But he removed 75% of the packing from the passenger-side muffler. He just cut a hole in the top like some of the pictures have shown and removed the packing.

Also, if you do not have a golf-tee mod (and no JB4) then the exhaust will be a good deal quieter, when I pulled the actuator harness plug, it got noticeably louder at idle.

Sered, the exhaust sounds great. I wonder if it would sound just as good with stock downpipes and all packing removed.

Since we now know that the packing is only one one side, it will probably be cheaper for people to have this done since the muffler shop will not have to cut into both sides.

Downpipes make a huge difference. If you were to remove all of the packing, the exhaust might only be marginally louder. Just a thought...

Agreed on that, I think removing the packing will be like putting a PE on the car, but the PE on a stock catted car isn't very loud if I remember correctly.

Member itschase posted a free e92 335i exhaust on the regional forum for California. He's located in LA area.

Someone interested to do more testing for the group?

Kinda sounds like mine:

Sorry, cant embed it

I have VRSF 3" downpipes, stock secondary cats, swapped oem midpipe resonator with x pipe, stock mufflers with golf tee mod... I would say mine sounds a bit quieter and actually would like to make it louder...

I've noticed zero drone, part of the reason it seems quiet to me on the inside of the car.

I also still have secondary cats in place.

When you had yours done did you also find packing only in the passenger muffler?

Good question.

I'd like to hear what tomz has to say about this too.

Garage List
Without reading everything because I followed for the first few pages, what's the verdict here?

Is removing the packing from the passenger side muffler the only thing required to sound like the PE?
Or;
Was the perforated pipe in any of the sections also required to be replaced in any way?

Btw, great work for the community. Thanks guys!

I didn't cut open my mufflers, they are intact. I merely replaced the resonator in the mid-rear of the car with an X pipe. I would also like to know that...

Replacing the pipe with non perforated pipe is basically a muffler delete.
So far from what it seems, removing say half of the packing is a great start! ( and it makes sense, I said it a few pages back, bmw even said that the 335is mufflers were the same with different packing, so just a bit less and that sounds great too, Im sure the regular muffler, is and pe are all the same design without different amounts of packing in each( no flap for pe though))

Yup, so far it seems like removing some packing is enough. The problem I see is that sered did packing removal only but his downpipes make a big difference so we don't know how it'll be like on stock without downpipes. As for the flap, golf tee mod or jb4 can flap can easily do that. Hopefully someone with a whole stock exhaust system will try packing removal and show us how it is then we will know.

What I've been wanting to do but having no time at all is:

Remove almost all packing, replace outer pref pipes/mini resonator with solid and leave the centers.

I think this is it guys, someone do it!

Guys, do you think its possible to cut open the exhaust from the bottom and pull out the packing? Cutting from the top of the muffler would require to cut off the mufflers themselves. By cutting from the bottom, I'm sure the job would be easier/cheaper.
