DIY Turbo Install for OEM Replacement
Vehicle: 2008 335i E92 335i AT (N54 engine)
Replacement Turbos: Vargas OEM replacements

Overview: I had a bad front turbo that was causing a lot of oil to burn off in my exhaust. Since I was on a serious budget, I did this myself on jack stands. If you choose to use this, I assume no responsibility for any damages or injuries to your vehicle or body.

If you see that I have missed anything, please let me know. I still have a ton of photos that didn't make the guide I am more than willing to share.

This is my first DIY so I apologize in advance for any errors in the following. If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them.

I also changed my oil pan gasket in between turbo removal and install. Pretty straight forward, but have pics if anyone needs them.

Prep Work:

1. Place vehicle on jackstands/ramps.
2. Remove all underbelly panels
3. Remove top panels, cabin filter, and valve cover
4. Remove front wheels

In total, I had about 12 hours of actual work and another 25 documenting, labeling, taking pictures, and writing this up. Doing it over again, I'm sure I could complete this whole process in 6-8 hours.

It wasn't a walk in the park, but ultimately glad I did it. I have a much better understanding on the n54 engine, and plan to have this car for awhile.

Update: I have about 300 miles on it and everything is running pretty smoothly. In the beginning, I had a loose coolant line on the water pump which caused a major spill. Please double-check all your hoses and clamps to make sure they are on correctly.

I also reran all vacuum lines as I had a small hole in the line for the rear waste gate actuator. Cost under $20 in parts with the T-couplers.

just wondering, how do you prime the turbo (let the oil flow through the thrust bearings) before turning on the engine?

Disconnect the DME relay from the fuse box under the hood. Crank engine over for 90 seconds

Great job on the write-up! I am going to be doing this same thing myself in April. Vargas OEM turbos in the garage on jack stands. This DIY looks like it will be a huge help!
