Angry Bad power steering pump?

So, I’ve already replaced my high pressure power steering line two times in a span of roughly 2.5-3yrs. I drive a 2009 328i, and I’m at an impass of what it could be. I’ve topped off my reservoir and bled it, PS fluid is good stationary, but disappears when I start driving. I’ve noticed little wet spots around my pump, but my lines are dry. I haven’t done a UV dye test just yet, but I want to know if my PS pump is failing, and if so, where to get a replacement.

Check realoem.com for your exact power steering pump number. LuK is the OE manufacturer for the power steering pump. I believe I've seen them new for $350-400 new which is like a third of the price of Genuine BMW.

Can you confirm the fluid isn't leaking from the connections at the power steering pump? Would suck to replace a working pump.

confirm part number:

Sorry for the delayed reply. I’ve checked every line coming in and out of the pump and in and out from the reservoir. I’ve hit it with brake clean, filled it up with whatever CHF11S I had left (filled up about half the reservoir) and it looks like it’s coming from the pump itself unfortunately.

The PS pump is super easy to replace. I bought a new (not reman) one from Rock Auto. I also replaced the pulley with the URO aluminum one and installed a new reservoir because it has a built in filter.

Also, when you replace your pump make sure you bleed the system properly.

1. Replace pump, reservoir, and maybe some of the lines going from the reservoir.
2. Fill up reservoir and rotate the steering wheel lock to lock at a moderately fast pace like 30-50 times with the car off. Top of the reservoir as needed, do not let it run dry. You can use this procedure to replace fluid using the feed and return lines at the reservoir.
3. The steering system is self bleeding, but we want to avoid running the new pump with air as much as possible. After doing the second step, turn the car on and again rotate the steering wheel until the pump stops making noise or you don't need to top of fluid.

If you're replacing the reservoir/lines, I'd highly recommend clic-R clamps and new clamps for that OEM workmanship. The clamps are like 70 cents.

+1 I have cut myself too many times on the tail of a worm gear clamp!

I got a cheap pinch clamp kit from amazon and it works well for things like this. Just make sure to get one with large clamps. Many kits come only with 1/2" and smaller clamps. I actually ended up using PEX clamps from home depot when I adapted in the newer style reservoir and needed to clamp in the aluminum reducers. I didn't have the right sizes and the PEX clamps worked well in a pinch (pun intended). Note those clamps do require the the pinch tool (a pex one works well or many kits come with them).

IS there a YT video on how to replace one?
Did you need to replace any of the hoses?

I replaced the 2 hoses from the reservoir to the pump,, the reservoir and the 2 flat washers that attach the high pressure line from the rack to the pump.

Which pump did you go with on rockauto? I plan on doing the same thing, but they look completely different from the pump on fcpeuro.

The Lares brand. It's a new part. Correct fit and has been working well. Currently the non active steering one is out of stock.

jadams161 I picked up a Lares pump recently for my 2007 BMW X3 Sport and discovered a bad leak where the high pressure line goes into the bottom of the pump once everything was reconnected. Did you run into any leaking issues? Any advice would be greatly appreciated (as it's about 900 to replace just the line from BMW)! The line was previously good and not leaking, so I'm at a loss here!
