I have an American Pit Bull Terrier, and I transport her in a crate - it is a 60 lbs missile if not secured.
My friend has a boxer and uses something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fashion-Dog-...-/200873980195 but also has the covers for the doors. |

I agree about the missile comment. There are dog harnesses that act as proper seat belts. They will protect you and your dog in an accident.
My experience is that main problem is the claws scratching and tearing the leather. If the dog is not secured, he/she will find a reason to move from one seat to another at the most inopportune time. You will either be unable to stop the seat change or if you do, you will be struggling against the "planted paws and claws in your leather. My Golden Retriever decided to change from front to back in my RDX. He put a large tear in the arm rest. The other things to be aware of, but not as significant are dirty paws, shedding and drooling, oh and the most fun is when they get car sick. Over the years I have used all sorts of blankets and covers and the best and most economical solution I have found is to use a moving blanket or two. You can pick them up for $10 from a UHAUL store. These things are indestructible, water resistant, thick enough to not allow claws to penetrate and surprising light and compact. The ones I have are black and they match my car interior. You can try the doggy booties, but I have never seen a dog that will keep them on for more than 5 minutes. |

I have two ridgebacks. They are allowed in a pinch but my wife drives a SUV so that's the dog car. For me its the fur and the drool and nose marks on the windows that cause the most consternation.

I have 2 Soft Coated Wheaten Terries. The only time they ever ride in the car is if they are going to get a haircut or if I have to drop them off at the kennel or my parents house. The boy is really good in the car and lays down in the passenger seat and doesn't really move. The girl is a frantic train reck in the car. She has really bad separation anxiety. She is always clawing at everything or jumping up to the top part of the door wanting me to open the window.

When I need to I stick 3 dogs in the car. Not often as I do not like all the hair to clean up. Its just a car. Leather cleans up easy.
My wifes Scion has fabric seats. We don't take the dogs in the Scion because its to hard to get the hair out of the fabric.

I have a military service animal with me 24/7. She is a golden retriever and sheds like crazy. A friend of mine has a hunting dog that travels with him a lot and he sent me a gift that made my year! It is the best back seat protection I have ever seen.
http://www.caninecovers.com/products...rs_custom.html It is made to fit your specific vehicle. I LOVE IT. It is easy to put in. Fits and looks extremely nice - sort of like it was made to be there and is really comfortable to sit on for when you have people in the car and don't want to take it out. I will try to remember to get some pictures. Here are some pics of my little girl with some famous dogs and people. This was on base when we got to meet Bobama (the Obama's Portuguese Water Dog) This was when the Miami Heat came to visit Wounded Warriors on base at the Amputee Clinic and I was lucky enough to meet the team after they finished and were getting debriefed. Dwayne Wade was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. LaBron James - not so much. I am from Miami born and raised and lived there for 26 years. This was a really cool day. I was shocked when I met Wade - I am about 6'2 and felt small next to him. I always thought him to be a little smaller but was shocked to see he was a bit bigger than me and still so fast and controlled on the court. That ball was singed by the whole team. Not a bad birthday present to give to my dad. |

Typically, I try to take another vehicle if I have to bring one of my dogs along with me. I did have to make an exception for the (second) time my beagle was bitten by a copperhead on our property. (Note the swollen front leg)
