Get ready to write a big check. First thing they will check is dme history. They are going to see exactly what happened. Hope you get lucky and dealer takes care of it for you, but that is a really long shot. My buddy money shifted his 6 month old M3, it cost him over $14k in repairs.

I would try the dealer - be honest and see if they can help. I would not be surprised if they charge you a couple hundred to diagnose it and many thousands on a repair quote....

Im willing to bet going to an indy and looking for a block on your own will be cheaper though.... good luck

If you fry the ecu, they cant see anything.

lol. Just to be sure, why don't you simply light the car on fire and push it off a cliff... then they truly will never realize you had a money shift. They might, however, get you for insurance fraud... but that's just some jail time.

Honesty is the best policy, especially when all it takes is just a tiny amount of diagnosis to support/dispute your story.

When the only two codes that pop relate to boost/air than yea, it's kinda obvious that I had a tune when the problem occurred. So yeah, they can see exactly what's going on.

One of the few advantages of an automatic..
Op its up to you if you want to be straight forward or play it off as if you never realized you money shifted..

^ exactly ... not much diagnosis needed when there is a hole in the block/pan.

Get the car moving, put it into a barrier, tell them you money shifted which caused the crash. Insurance should take care of you then.

Is it possible to add mis-shifting to your insurance policy? OP is not the first guy on this board to lose an engine on 2nd gear.

I guess you can just change the position of your hand as you row gears, and that's a sort-of insurance against messing up.

Good luck OP, it's just money, and it'll come and go.

it doesn't surprise me how many people would commit fraud for their own mistakes... what a shame.

How far back can BMW see the over rev condition? Also, would revving to redline in first and second not replicate the same code?

I don't know how long the code will be stored. You can rev to redline in any gear without issue (providing you have oil in the pan). The rev limiter is a tad higher than the beginning of redline IIRC.

To those suggesting that you "fry" your ECU, as soon as the dealership (or any other shop) sees your lifters, etc, the gig is up.

OP:

IMHO, just be honest and tell them what happened as they're going to find out anyway. It really does suck and I feel for you; best of luck today.

holy crap dude i feel bad for u brotha. you should really be honest, and if ur dealership is a dick, go to a new one and tell them what happened, or at ur usual dealership just ask to sit down with the SA's manager, iv had great sucess when not speaking to the SA. SA are really worthless, my old SA was against my turbo replacement, and i went straight to the manager and he took care of it for me, which he really shouldnt have considering what they knew ITS ALL RELATIONSHIPS/CONNECTIONS MY FRIEND THEY WILL GET YOU A LONG LONG WAY.

-----------Disconnect battery to clear ECM. When they ask, tell them you had a friend bring a spare battery by and swapped it out to see if the veh would start. Play stupid, but if you treat them like they are morons they will just deny your claim and send you packing for insulting them.

-Good luck.

what i dont get is how can u money shift so bad? do you even have a ssk? it seems so obvious when u are in 2nd and 4th that i just dont see myself ever money shifting...its so obvious im not even going to knock on wood lol.

but whats done is done i suppose and i would just be honest also just like everyone is saying...cause seriously you are not going to be able to get away with i was revving high. they will know exactly what happened when they go into the dme and probably will see a rod through the engine so will probably be assuming thats what you did

so lying about this whole situation will only lead to more headaches. this is a lesson learned and just try to find a better way to resolve this issue...maybe through your insurance

oh and forgot to mention...there are a lot of techs out there on these forums for personal reasons and to search for these kind of situations so now you also have to be worried they are reading this right now and the next person that comes in with a car that looks to have money shifted they will probably think this is your post lol.

i would have this removed now since you have basically all the info

You can have a tree land on your car, that way the insurance totals it... lol

This sucks. If its bad enough for oil to spew out of the motor that most likely means you blew a hole somewhere in your engine and its going to require a full motor swap/rebuild.

Been there done that with my old car but it was still able to start. Only bent the valves.

One of those life lessons you'll never learn until you experience it.
