both of my N54s made that noise. had a 135i that made that noise, and my 335i made that noise even when bone stock off the dealer lot. Nothing to be worried about.

Wastegate rattle? Similar to the sound I had but it was my wastegate and the dealer replaced it.

How did the dealer fix your wastegates? Do you mean actuators?

The ticking is something like the fuel pressure release valve or something (cant remember exact name). Last I heard.

Completely normal.

If you guys are looking for a quite car, go buy a hybrid.

This car has two turbo's spinning 10's of thousands of RPM's, and direct injection, and all the other over engineered bells and whistles that come along with it, its bound to make a noise.

No, something different.

Its part of the fuel system. That is what makes that ticking noise.

(i know injectors tick, but thats not what this ticking noise is).

That noise is NOT normal. I observed the same noise once in a parking lot after the car had been driven a while. It was so unusual that I opened the hood to investigate. All I determined is that it was coming from the top of the valve cover area near center. I shut if off and let it sit for a few minutes. After restarting, the noise was gone and hasn't appeared since. That was at around 20k miles on my '07 335i (now at 40k). HPFP replaced at around 30k. All stock.

By the way, OP, the videos in post #7 don't have the same issue you're dealing with. The ticking in those videos is more like the normal ticking of the engine, especially during cold starts.

My 2006 330xi did the same thing yesterday after a long trip. Just a little rev made it go away and it hasn't come back. Flywheel springs maybe? Mine is a 6MT. Yours does sound a lot like a loose spark plug in the video though.

If the noise goes away after quick blip of the throttle, its considered normal. Again part of some fuel relief valve.

I agree, it if throws a code its not "normal." If you can change it by warming the car up or just throwing it some more fuel, its normal.

My car had 1 mile on the ODO and did this. Not that it justifies as the end all be all.

But there is countless threads on this subject.

Scanned the car today with the BT tool and nothing came up. Didn't hear the noise today.

It's the evap control valve. My friend at bmw checked my car when i complained about it and said they would replace it but the new part would do the same thing. No point in changing it, but it takes away from the sound of the motor.

My car does that on cold starts. Rev the engine, if no ticking is present, you can eliminate wastegate issues.

Sorry, but what is an "evap control valve"? Did you mean fuel tank ventilation valve, by any chance?

Dude, I have an N55, and I just noticed I have a similar ticking. Seemed to come about when it got cold, these engines are just weird, they make noise. I would ignore it until a code comes up or you see black smoke out of your tailpipes (oh wait, it's too late at that point ). JK, I wouldn't worry.

My 335i makes the same noise sometimes. It sounds exactly like the lifter tick noise that the N52 makes.
