Engine warm up time?

My e92 runs fine. But compared to the other cars we have it's very, very slow to warm up.
For reference the needle in the temp gauge in the 4Runner starts moving within 5 minutes. The Audi I had before the 92 was about the same.
I see BMW uses a different coolant. VAG motors run a different coolant than the standard green Prestone-like fluid the Toyota takes.
By the time I get to work, less than a 10 minute drive, it's just starting to move the needle.
I was taking an extended route to get the temp into the 180 range but that takes 20 minutes.

Is there something I should look at or does the motor run cool?

I don't believe you're looking at coolant but in fact oil temp which will always be slower to heat up.

Things might be a bit different but my MHD gauges for my 335i show coolant shoots right on up but oil lags behind by about 15 minutes similar to what you're describing.

you can't compare oil temp to water temp, oil will always take longer and the needle doesn't start moving until 160*f which is more than 'warmed up'. your oil might only be 120*f in your 4runner if it's 'warmed up' based on the water temp.

yeah, that's an oil temp gage - not coolant temp.

Right when I start the car I'll give it a couple revs up to 5k-6k RPM. That warms it up pretty fast.

BTW anyone ever have any issues with clanking noises coming from the engine when they accelerate?

In all seriousness, my N51 takes about 5-10 minutes to get into operating temp from a cold start. I idle for a few minutes and then have a 5 minute drive to the freeway in the morning. By the time I get on the freeway and over into the left lane the car is good to go. It is worth saying that the coldest it gets here is maybe 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and my garage is generally 10-15 degrees warmer than outside temperature.

These engines do stay pretty warm for a while after an average drive.

Probably the worst thing you could do.

Revving a cold engine is not good practice.

Duh. I wasn't thinking about the oil. That is a relief because I was worried that because the previous owner only put 36,000 miles on it before I bought it. It's definitely a garage queen now since I put it on a trickle charger.
