Makes perfect sense, "Mustang" is a much more respected name than "Ford". They want to attract youth generation and "Mustang EV" sounds way cooler than "Ford EV". They want to repeat in 2020 what "Mustang" brand did in 1960's but utilizing recent trends - EV + SUV. New generation wants EVs, but cool EVs like Tesla, Mustang EV etc... NOT Chevy Bolt EV

Mustang appears to be evolving into a BRAND rather than just a MODEL. I expect within the next few years there will be more Mustangs added to the family and maybe eventually spin-off the Mustang brand into it's own thing?

Either way, good job Ford on embracing change. I won't buy it but happy it's an option out there.

And it's not even the looks of the iX3 that kills it. It's the fact that its RWD only and has no long range battery option.

I went ahead and put down the $500 on the Mach E GT last night. I figure I have a year and half to decide if I actually want it.

What's funny is that it seems that Ford has decided that any car it will make will henceforth be called a "Mustang".

Nice, I'm actually thinking about the same thing. Also I checked their "Ford Pass" charging network and it's not bad at all.

Isn't BMW the same? Every car they make got some kind of M-badge on it

Could be a compelling choice, depending how this leases vs others. Looks sweet to me.

The car looks decent enough on it's own, but to call it a Mustang seems like a desperate hail Mary to capitalize on the name. Nothing about it is Mustang besides the badge and tribar tail lights.

Its akin to calling a car an F150 just because of the sales figures. Extremely elementary and short sighted marketing strategy.

LOL at people getting their panties in a bunch about a name.

I’m almost 100% convinced a corvette suv is coming now after seeing this Ford launch. GM and Ford spinning off their biggest nameplates. Very smart to be honest.

Oh no, they besmirched the vaunted Mustang name!

Oh, that's right, they've already done that.

Ford CEO says electric Mustang will bring "instant profit"

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/video...t-profit-video

In another Bloomberg interview today, a statement was made during an interview with Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of automotive, that electric vehicles require 30% less labor than IC-engined vehicles.

Labor reduction will be an accelerant for automakers to convert to electric vehicles, far faster than regulatory pressure alone, in the areas of fuel economy and emissions.

I haven't stepped into a Ford dealership in eons, but if it is run like any other domestic dealership, this car will see low sales. One of the main reasons why EVs (sans Tesla) aren't selling a whole lot is because the sales person does a terrible job at selling them. A salesperson will almost always revert to something that they are knowledgeable and comfortable to make the $ale than to risk it with something they have little grasp at.

That's why Tesla just went with a different sales model. Their staff are pretty much lot boys. Legacy car mfgs need to rethink how to sell cars especially to the millennials.

I don't think today anyone cares about what the salesman has to say. You all do your research online. If you walk in a dealership without even knowing what car you want to look at you will get hosed.

True story.

At the same time, there is a certain appeal to placing an order online and having the car delivered to you without the need to interact directly with a sales person.

It remains to be seen whether traditional automakers will try to move more aggressively toward that model. Obviously they have to work with their established dealership networks, but they should still be able to allow customers to place the order and handle all of the financing online. In fact, I'm pretty certain that is already being done today in a limited fashion. A customer could probably even take delivery of a new vehicle at their home, although they'd likely have to pay for the transport from the dealership.

When reserving a Mach E online, part of the process is choosing a dealership. However, we won't know until closer to the launch date just how much more of the transaction can be completed online and how much interaction with the dealership will be necessary.

Oh yeah for sure, that's even better.

I've never bought a new car yet (probably never will) but with all the builders online would be nice to just be able to build it like you want and select order. I think today sometimes you can't even have your car built like you want and sometimes they "force" you to get one already on the lot.

Tesla does that nicely.

What a stupid name, there’s no reason for it to be associated with the mustang. Why not start something new and fresh?

Is there a reason to associate Lamborghini or Aston Martin (and probably Ferrari soon) with SUVs? Guess what, they did it. Not sure why everybody so concern with Mustang name like it's prohibited in Second Amendment...
