Just got this error code related to my glow plug in cylinder 5. How serious is this? car does not run any differently. can this be the excuse I have been looking for to force the dealer check and see whether or not I have CBU?

The question is not 'whether or not I have CBU?'.
The right question is: 'I know that i have it, the question is how much and how bad it is'

They won't consider that CBU. At most they'll change out your six glow plugs and control module.

They do have to pull the intake to get to do the work though, have them take some pictures or ask to inspect it while its off.

I just had all 6 glow plugs changed and the car idles better when cold and feels a bit more responsive again as it had started to feel a bit lazy low down. Apparently the glow plugs are not just used on start up, they also as used until the car is upto temperature and also for regenerations.

The weirdest part is that now my glow plugs have been changed my car revs about 200-300rpm higher before changing gear automatically now, when under full throttle. I am guessing it was in a "semi" limp mode. If the plugs are failed / failing, the car wont regen properly so it must reduce the rev limiter and very slightly the power too. Hence the car felt slightly less responsive.

Most likely they did cleanup something on the way, and have cleaned all other codes, even hidden ones.
This is why you seeing differences.

I do not see the reason to start glow plugs on summer. From my time with diesel Ford i remember on winter there was a sign that glow plugs are on, so we were supposed to way until it will be gone before starting the engine.
On 335d on winters i have notice a delay between button press and the starter start turning, probably for glow plugs to warm up.
