Washers for braided lines?

Hi Guys,

I fit some HEL braided lines a few weeks ago. The kit came with some copper washers that I ignored because the lines coming off the car had no washers. I assumed (wrongly) that they were like a general use washer that may or may not fit the kit.

Anyway, the washers are supposed to go on the line into the front caliper. I spoke to the line reseller who said they were absolutely necessary and dangerous to be without.

I'm just wondering if thats true? The lines fit perfectly in the same way that the original lines were fitted.

I'm going to add the washers this weekend but just curious about whether others have had to add washers on their kits also ?

Thanks,

Christian

They are sealing washers, also known as crush washers, and absolutely necessary. They're sometimes also made out of aluminum.

As you tighten down the banjo bolt, they compress, or "crush" to form a seal.

Same as the sealing washer on your oil pan drain plug.

Garage List
If the lines coming off the car are in-line thread then its a flare or taper seal and no washers are needed; If its a banjo then as mentioned above^^ ya those are what seal the fluid in.

If banjos were installed without washers, they'd leak immediately, and the brakes would never work.

Thanks guys.

I put the washers in over the weekend. The line's are not banjo's, just a fixed male screw.

I'm assuming that they are just for sealing as you guys have said.

Thanks,

Christian
