: THIS

I would bet my wives life on it .

I just replaced mine I had the same issue and no sign of leak...looking closely around the serp. belt I saw the leak.

I rec. anyone going through oil (more than "normal") to check this on their car. My dealer said it is extremely common.

With that much of a drop the oil filter housing leak would most certainly cause oil to pool on your garage floor or at least on the under body panel.

If you don't see either of those you have something else going on. Perhaps the oil level sensor is toast. I replaced mine and the oil fluctuations have disappeared...for now.

Next time I go to the dealer for a top off, I'll be sure to ask how much they put in. I'm sure if its 1 quart to top off, I'm assuming the sensor is toast.

Did you ever find the cause of this? I am having a similar issue. My oil consumption is not as drastic. I am using a quart about every 1500 miles or so. No smoke, no smell, no drips that I have found anyways.

So has anyone running a stock setup been able to successfully reduce their oil consumption? I have been trolling different threads/forums on here and over at N54tech and have not really found any good news... There is a guy over there selling replacement PCV valves, but that seems like it only helped those running boosted turbos, etc., not stock setup and seems like results where even somewhat mixed. I would sure like to reduce my car's oil consumption a bit, but just not finding a whole lot out there to help.

I have done the same with my car. First oil change at 1k than one change in beetween dealer service changes +using 10-40w red line full syntetick oil does the trick.Zero oil consumption on my car-no top offs car at 50k now and tuned since new.Runs like new-now with BMS WW meth on the car it is a beast...love the over 420hp and 500tq POWER

That is a complete BS-this car does not need to burn oil to run, period .It has been proven over and over again
PS. Try red line oil 5-30 winter and 5-40 summer every 5k

30K miles here. 5,000 oil change intervals. The care barely sees 7,000 miles per year.

The oil consumption is non-existent for the first 3,000 miles after a fresh oil change. When the oil gets beaten up a bit, the engine starts consuming oil, first slowly at about 1/3 of a quart every 1000 miles and close to 1/3 per quart every 500 - 600 miles. Usually, when this happens, it is very close to my 5000 mile oil change marker so I just change the oil and consumption goes away.

Recommendations for best kind of oil and where to buy at the best price (fyi-daily driver, stock setup)? I would tend to agree with vasillalov that the oil consumption increases with age of the oil, but I have not measured this, but am going to start tracking.

I was getting close to 1 quart per 1K. Complained to the dealer at my service visit.
The investagated, said two plug sockets had oil in them, ran a pressure check, found the pcv was failing, and replaced it. We'll see what happens now.
I will say the car feels much smoother than before, even though I've driven 10 miles fromt the dealer. Startup was much smoother, no more roughness at all.

I'm also seen some oil consumption.
Bought the car 1 1/2 months ago (about 1.5K miles) and today I checked my oil level and it is kine of low.

How much oil is from MIN to MAX? is it 1 quart? Is is this a big oil consumption or somewhat normal?

I'm installing downpipes and doing oil change tomorrow so I'll take a close look everywhere.

2007 335i Tuned FBO 60k miles, I get the oil changed every 7500 miles and I never had to add an oil to this point.

On the other hand I have a 2002 ML 320 that i need to add a quart every 1k miles, but the car runs a drives great otherwise, and yes the dealers told me it was normal.

Looks like I found the issue.
Now to find a DIY to replace the Valve Cover Gasket. My research so far, looks like it is a PITA

Altough your sensor might be affected (many n54 deal with this) the top and lowest level indicators are fixed values and not affected by an imperfect sensor.

I think every n54 owner should:

1) make sure the oil filter housing gasket has been replaced

2) order rob beck's PCV valve replacement

3) order rob beck's PCV cap

4) keep an eye on turbo's (common oil consumption area...blown seals, leaking oil lines, etc)

5) check the valve cover gasket

-----------------------------------------

I've done all of that and my n54 doesn't consume oil enough to warrant a top off, in between 5k oil change intervals. I also run Mobil 1 synthetic 0w-40, but I get the same lack of oil consumption from BMW castrol oil. The oil level sensor can also be a culprit, I've just never had one fail on me. For those wondering, I've previously had a few other n54's.
