DIY: Installing E91 (wagon) Factory Alarm

Here is some info and pics for E91 people. I cobbled it together from several spots to make it happen. Hat tip to Hoody007 and jsunma for motivating me to do this!

You'll need an E90 alarm siren, bracket/mount, and hood switch. These are readily available on ebay or FCP, and you can buy new or used depending on what you want for you car. Here is the E90 DIY thread which is a GREAT overall resource: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1487

The unique part for the E91 is the ultrasonic sensor which is shared with the E84 X1 vehicles. I bought this used on ebay with the cover attached. You don't need the additional pigtail or harness, just the two parts connect like this:

You will need to remove the central map light/sunroof console. That gave me a LOT of problems but I finally got it off. Here is a video that shows the idea, but it was a LOT harder than shown here:

Once that's off, it's a simple plug and play job. Here is a diagram showing where it installs in an existing bracket:

Then reassemble everything. Blinker, works immediately, although you will need to code some of the other portions to work.

Here are some more pics showing my install. Your car needs to be pre-wired in which case the plug will be right there when you open up the spot:

Here is the module plugged in and snapped into the pre-existing bracket to hold it:

View of reassembly and updated cover piece:

Thanks! I was very impressed with the foresight to have everything there and ready to go! It is a ridiculously easy install other than getting the dome/map light housing off. That took me an hour of fiddling, prodding, and pushing to get off, and I snapped the light cover piece which really annoyed me :-/

Thanks! Which years are prewired again? And what if I just want the clown nose blinking feature sans the rest of the alarm? Would I just install this module?

I don't know which years are pre-wired... I read anecdotally that pre-LCI ones are, and that it tapers off in later production. You would need to check VIN and find out. But an easy check is to see if the plug is there under the hood for the hood sensor. If it's there, I imagine the rest of the wiring would be as well???

This sensor/module lights up the clown nose, but I think it also enables a few other functions like door opening and towing angle alarms. I haven't confirmed though!

Jesus, you need someone with porn star (tiny but strong) hands to get that out. Notice how the presenter doesn’t do it, he calls someone else who actually can do it? lol.

Been trying to get the center out for a good 20 minutes now to get ready for the e84 alarm module’s arrival this weekend. Also think I might pull the rails totally off while I have half this headliner stuff already undone.

It was not fun. Not sure it would be, even with the porn star. I literally don't know what finally worked to let the front clips release. But one let go, and the other followed easily after that. Once off, the install is a breeze.

Oh yeah, I broke the clips on the frosted light cover as well. Just sort of dangling there now.

I was kinda' amazed that they built the slot to hold the module and everything was ready to go. Seems like including it and having every car with alarm would have been a no-brainer.
