Wow, if you have that little faith in your parts department, where do you plan on having your car serviced?

Dont plan on having my car serviced at that dealer. It just happens to be the closest one to me and its conveniently located 2 minutes from my job. Plus I plan on doing my own oil changes and fluid changes through out the term of the lease.
Still no confirmation on part number!! |

Does the 335 use the same filter as the 328.
I was actually surprised my local auto zone had the oil I was looking for, Mobil 1 0W-40, so I picked up 7 quarts, now I just need the filter. |

Well I just did my oil change. Very simple. Thanks for the DIY guys.
I used the Mobil 1 0w-40. I had read somewhere that it got rid of shudders you feel at idle, and it seems to have worked. The original oil came out very very dirty as others have mentioned, and I changed at 2000 miles. |

Just compelted my DIY Oil Change. Thanks to the OP and others for all the advice I gathered from this thread. Didn't take very long at all. Hardest part of the whole thing was getting the small o-ring off.
I must say I was surprised that when I took the oil filter cap off that some oil leaked down the side of the housing as I was unscrewing it. Oh well...it's much better than my old car with the side mounted oil filter...used to run all down the side and was a pain to clean up.

Ericfother, sounds like you didnt depressurize the system before removing the oil filter cap. Next time, unscrew the oil fill cap first. Mine did not leak at all when taking the oil filter off. I too had a tough time taking off the smaller of the two o rings, but nothing major.

This weekend I did my first oil change and other than getting comfortable being under a few thousand pounds supported by some plastic rhino ramps, it was a really easy procedure. I couldnt have done it without the pictures and insights provided by this thread. Thanks again. Now its time to do one on the e46.

I just spoke with my local BMW parts dept and they're charging about 15 for the filter and 10+ for oil. That's a total of over $85.00 for a do it yourself job when I see others on here getting by with a $50-$60 charge... Any recommendations on where to get at least the filters online (true oem ones that won't fall apart...)

Wow $15 for the filter, thats steep. Check around your other dealers, call the parts dept, most dealers in my area will actually deliver as well.
Go to any autozone, napa or what ever they have in your area, and look for Mobil 1 0w-40, I guarantee you its less than $10 a quart.

Yeah - I couldn't believe it either... And the parts guy said it with a straight face and was almost taken aback by my studdering "WHHHAAAAATTTTTT???"
I'm gunna take the advice and check out some of the other dealerships in one of the other city when traveling around enjoying the new ride... I'll just pick up a bulk supply of the stuff and bring it back home... Thanks for confirming I wasn't out of my mind... Edit: just read the 3series accessories doc. It lists 1qt for under $6.00... LOL This is the stuff that gives BMW a bad name... They need to clean that up... Last edited by Booboo12; 06-05-2007 at 09:58 PM.. |

Yes yes ultimate service is included, but I would like to change my oil and filter before 15000 miles. Overkill - maybe. But it would provide me peace of mind which is as worth it to me. However, being charged almost double for things is not worth peace of mind...
Argue the overcharge before you argue the excessive oil change. edit: As a side note once again: I called their service dept and was quoted $80 and change for an off schedule oil and filter change... That's doable... and I feel good about the service dept... I just don't understand the parts dept quote (and there was NO mistaking that I wasnted to purcahse an oil filter kit and 7 qts of oil for a DIY oil change with the parts guy... ) Last edited by Booboo12; 06-06-2007 at 07:41 AM.. |

last comment from me.... called up the parts dept of another bmw shop in TX that I pass by once every few months when visiting family. pricing is $5.40 for a qt of oil and about $10 for the oil filter kit. bwmcca membership gets you 15% off the filter...
solves that problem for me... and I can feel good babying my baby... (ty pikkashoe!!!) Last edited by Booboo12; 06-06-2007 at 03:19 PM.. |

It seems like after I put in 0w40 Mobil 1, DS mode is holding the gear longer when I get on the gas then let off. Could this just be a result of my transmission being broken in? I have 2k miles

Not sure if break in will affect the transmission holding the gears. I doubt it.

i find it funny how some of you guys think $15 is crazy for an oil filter.
All E9x cars use the same filter. And if you want to avoid spilling oil from the housing, unscrew it and pull it up a little in one shot...dont push it back in because then the oil will spill over the side. Prop it up by sticking a screwdriver down in the oil to support the cap..so when you drain the oil, what ever is in the filter housing will drain too. |
