I will say though, that it is EXTREMELY rare to have "rear minor fender bender" total a car out where the insurance company would consider it totalled and would brand the title as salvaged. In many circumstances the cost to repair the damage have to exceed 80% of the vehicles value at the time of the accident or have to be structural damage to non-replaceable pieces like the unibody that the insurance company cannot guarantee the vehicles structural integrity under their warranty/safety standards. Even if the accident appeared to be "visually minor" from the outside there must have been structural damage to the actual unibody for an insurance company to total the car out, pay the previous owner the entire value of the vehicle, and then resell the vehicle as a "salvage" title car to either the original owner or some other new owner @ auction or similar. I have owned my share of salvaged vehicles in my time, especially back when I was a starving college student and most were great cars that were only sold after having over 300K+ miles or being again totaled in vehicles accidents that other drivers caused. But I always knew that selling one of those cars would never net the same price as a clean title vehicle no matter how well I took care of them and used only OE parts. Long story short, it's better just to be upfront and honest about the actual damaged as trying to "play it down" just comes off as shady/dishonest and makes a potential buyer shy away because it makes them wonder what else you are trying to hide. If you have pictures of the damage definitely provide those as potential buyers will know you are being up front about the damage and be more willing to take you at your word vs thinking you are shady or dishonest. Just my $.02 from being an experienced salvaged title buyer myself some time ago. |

Info
Thanks for all the info, but if their was any frame damage I'll would have stated it not trying to pull a fast one or fool anyone, and when you state that all insurance company work as what you think 80% it actually all goes back to the agent that comes and look at your vehicle it's all in he's hands.
And not all vehicle when get damaged have structural damage. Their is a lot in play for a vehicle to get frame damage. Abs none will ever line up perfect and mine lined up like nothing happened. Anyways thanks for information. Only serious injuries and Ik what my car is worth being a salvage or none don't make much a of a difference their is a lot of cars out their that get in a huge accident but still "clean title" just because they didn't report it. |

I'll be honest - I am sick of these "just testing the waters" or "trade only" BS sale posts. Either you are selling the car or you are not.

if this helps you: https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...17&postcount=7
this is in relation to a M2 that was listed FS. it might give you insight into what a Totalled car is and thus a Rebuilt title means the car has been approved by a DMV to be redeployed to public roads AFTER being totalled. i don't know this posters car and wouldn't pass judgement. buyer be aware, especially with a low post count and low rep count. text from my link above: I'm not bagging on this rebuild as I know nothing about it. However I am in the insurance industry and also work with body shops. A car like this (due to rear/side and front damage likely had a bent frame. These can be "fixed" but bending the frame weakens the frame rails, as compared to factory-straight frame rails. The front end would be clipped in this type of repair and new front engine rails would be welded on for the engine to rest on and all the body parts to hang on once rebuilt. Obviously the paint is redone on the front and side parts of the car and new paint blended into the old, non-damaged paint (if that was the case, undamaged). Cars are deemed a total loss when the cost of repairs, done to insurance company standards, reach 75% of the car's value. Now, you can repair a car for less money than an insurance company will pay to do so and that's because and insurance company is held to a high repair standard per each state's laws. So, if this car checks out to you on a PPI and drive test, and you can insure a salvage title to protect your equity, then decide accordingly. Most insurance companies will have difficulty insuring the value of a salvaged/branded title due to these cars have reduced value over a clean title. Again, I cannot speak to the quality and condition of this car but I have had my own cars that would have been totalled per insurance rules and have had them repaired myself and the car is fully safe to drive and without ANY mechanical or safety issues (hood, xenon headlights - which would have caused the total loss due to their cost new from BMW, when we bought used to save the car, expansion tank, front bumper and radiator). GLWS to the seller. There is a buyer for every car in the market. You'll find yours in time. |

Nah, it's been at least 15 years time since I've had to buy a salvaged vehicle. I only buy brand new vehicles now. That principal engineer salary definitely pays the bills and gives me enough discretionary income to buy just about any vehicle I want whenever I want. That being said it doesn't mean I'm stupid with my money and will buy a car at the peak of vehicle pricing due to silicon shortages like we are experiencing today. Maybe one day you will be able to afford a car that is not salvaged .

Sorry but they simply don't total cars for fender benders. The agent doesn't just pocket the money, that's not how it works. Nobody is saying this is a bad car, it's probably a great car, but I agree it's a massive red flag trying to downplay it like this. Do you have any pics of the damage? Any receipts from the dealer where all the parts came from? Each state has slightly different criteria for what exactly totals a car, but the in vast majority, it's 75-80% of the value of the car OR structural damage OR airbag deployment. I've seen a ton of e90s with an accident on their carfax and they were not totaled but that's not the case here, so what happened?

this is great..!!! I’m in an ‘11 e90 that was totaled by a local indie dealer (EAG-Enthusiast Auto Group…two brothers that started local Bimmer shop specializing in M cars, & now sell/consign ultra low mile, all original M car/collector cars in the $100’s of k’s)…. owner hit a curb and rashed the rim good & scuffed the lower right bumper.
I went and looked at it, and the tie rod end was bent, no frame rail damage or anything else, still drove like new (46k mi in Feb ‘22)… I paid probably too much ($10k), but what a car..!!! |

PS- EAG never even pulled the tire off the car…they just started listing everything from the rim into the drivetrain & suspension (it’s an xDrive), and well…it doesn’t take long to reach the 65-75% of value to total (many states have diff total limits…i.e. Cali is, or at least used to be very high (I read at one time it was something like 95%-?))….

I recommend everyone stays far, far away from this car. The op is very abrasive anyway.
