B58 coils on n55?

Hi guys , I saw a few people who claim to have installed b58 coils on n54 and n55, anyone here done that too? If so do you mind sharing your experience with the new coils. Thanks

Aren't these the same Eldor Coils we've been using on the N54?

Using Eldor Coils myself on a 2007 335i, they are pretty reliable. Haven't had any issues with them.

Either Delphi or Eldor should be fine upto around 500-600 WHP from what I understand.

No they're the type with the block head. Idk the proper term lmao. They look similar to the GTI ignition coils if you've ever seen those.

Just Googled them, yes your right, although Eldor make the OE coils,

What's the point of using B58 specific coils on N54's when we have the Eldor Coils which are just as reliable?

There's guys running upwards of 600whp with Eldor coils and they haven't had any coil related issues, personally don't even see the need/benefit of going for PRW or other coil setups.

Nothing with about 99% of 335i's tbh. It's just a moreso an affordable alternative to the PR/BL kits. So in terms of "need" it's probably for the builds that need the upgraded coils I think. I'm not too familiar with ignition coil technicals but rbryantaz started a project here for a retrofit kit. I think there's better info in there

Just read that, so basically unless you have ignition issues, misfires which cannot be resolved by using Eldor Coils, no need to upgrade to the B58, BL or PR kits

I will have the kit for the n54 very soon based on what I did for my car. I have a few people signed up for prototypes already.

I have an early n55 spark plug extension piece from an n55 cylinder head that I am looking at to see if I can also make a plate for the n55. The later n55 is a little different so it would be a different part...

I would need a beta tester volunteer to test a prototype on the early n55 given that I don't own a car with that engine.

I have a 2011 335i I can use as a beta tester.

I planned to look into seeing if I could move the Eldors on my N54 to the N55 when I upgrade to the B58s on my N54

Ok I just have to work out where I can position the coils to fit inside of the valve cover on the n55 and also have a mounting point that doesn't interfere with the injector tubes.

I should be close but would need to have someone verify.

I will work on getting you a prototype n55 to go with the n54 version.

2011 appears to be a crossover year.

I have this spark plug tube insert started which is supposed to be from Jan 2011 and later (but I have seen an October 2010 car have the new style).

I don't have the older version in hand yet:

Both are a little challenging to fit the B58 coils mounting plates into...

I will see what I can do, this is currently lower priority than getting the n54 versions to people.

Sure no problem, I'll try to start taking the covers off it and get some pics to send to help confirm visuals.

It's my wife's car that I bought her once I started building my N54. So she'll be nervous if she sees me tearing into it, but she only puts ~3-4,000 miles a year on it.

How did the N55 work go? Is there a problem with just installing them similar to OE coils (press on) and not having a bolt/bracket?

Looking at it, there is basically only 1 way to clock them and even still, its a tight fit. Don't see the room for more hardware/mounts and retain the factory covers easily.

The B58 coils use a spring connector so they require a mounting bracket of some sort.

How much clearance is there above the coil on the N55?

My concern like you said is what orientation we can use where it clears the valve cover and still fits...

Can get you a lot of photos if you're interested. I think there are examples of clip-in spring type coils. Just thinking of other options. But one option may be to simply have a strap over the top of the coil, possibly. Inelegant but it'd probably work.

BTW, I have the early-style N55 in the e-series.

N55 B58 coil kit development update

I spent some time figuring out a plate to mount the B58 coils in the early N55 this weekend.

Here is a teaser rendering and mockup, I will have a few prototypes made next week.

Name: early n55 coil plate render.JPG
Views: 3366
Size: 38.2 KB

For the prototype I did two different positions for the front coil.

This one might be a bit close to the fuel line:
Name: early n55 b58 coils position 2.JPG
Views: 3486
Size: 50.0 KB

This is the likely winner.
Name: early n55 b58 coils position 1.JPG
Views: 3470
Size: 52.9 KB

I have a couple of people that are interested in testing them. Send me PM if you are also interested in being a prototype tester for the kit. As with the N54 kits I will give a ~20% discount for testing!

I also did a version of the later style N55 and here is a rendering of that:

Name: late n55 coil plate render.JPG
Views: 3413
Size: 37.7 KB

Coils mounted:
Name: late n55 b58 coils mounted.JPG
Views: 3425
Size: 44.2 KB

These are designed to bolt on OVER the fuel line bracket. They 1/8" thick so I don't expect them to require longer bolts, removal of the fuel lines or other changes.

I hope to have these available soon.

The oxygen sensor bracket will have to be spaced upward to avoid contact with the top of the coil. A spacer will be provided and the O2 sensor mounting plate may need a small lip trimmed off from it depending on the car.

N55 and S55 B58 Coil adapter kit prototype ready for testing

Hi everyone.

I have the prototype coil B58 mounting plates back for both version of the N55/S55 engines.

The earlier N55 engines up to 01/2011 appear to have a hollow spark plug recess insert that has an aluminum screening part: 11127570780 and use insert part number: 11127570028

This is the prototype setup for N55 engines before Jan 2011:

Name: early n55 b58 coils.jpg
Views: 3462
Size: 78.4 KB

The later N55 and S55 no longer use the screening piece and instead have the coil mounts cast into the insert. They use part number: 11127605104

Positioning of a B58 coil is tight but doable in the newer setup. I made two different mounting points for the prototype which is close to the stock angle and an alternative position.

Here is the prototype setup for these cars:

The first position keeps the coils as low as possible but the connectors are very close but it is not an issue (the back coil connector just goes on first).

Name: late n55 or s55 prototype b58 plate position 2.jpg
Views: 3542
Size: 91.2 KB

The second position turns the coil making it very close to the cylinder head. To clear the cylinder head the coil spacer has to be slightly taller.

Name: late n55 or s55 prototype b58 plate position 1.jpg
Views: 3347
Size: 89.7 KB

I have 2 prototype sets of each and can make more if there is interest!

Hey champ,

Would love a set for the early N55s, how can I sign up and have them sent to Australia?

Send me a PM with your email and I can send you a paypal invoice for them.

I have one set of the early N55 plates in stock that I can send to you. I also just sent another set of them to Australia.

Shipping is no problem, international shipping is just $30 more than shipping to the US in a priority mail flat rate bubbler.

Thanks for your interest. Hopefully we will have a bunch of early N55s out there running these soon!

Happy Days!

Couple of questions (have to hit the 4 post replies before PM's),
- is it just the bracket, or are the standoffs and hardware in the kit?
- do you supply the B58 plug adapters or the connectors to make them?
- can you do me a plug an play kit including injectors and plug adapters (pain in the butt betting parts in Oz)?

1)

The kit comes with the bracket and standoffs/hardware, replacement coil boot/spring, and the b58 connectors.

2)

I supply the b58 coil plugs as pigtails that are spliced in with the heat shrink solder connectors. I have a prototype connector where you can depin the stock coil connectors and put them into a different housing that can then plug in as an adapter.

3)

Do you mean coils not injectors? I am not currently providing the injectors. I don't have a source for them other than our parts vendors.

I have a depin tool for these plugs so the adapter seems like the way to go, eventually I will probably solder them in but worth running them with an adapter for a while before chopping oem loom.
