Seller only had it for three months

Looking at a fairly nice 325ix 2007 150k miles for $4500; carfax is clean except accident in 2017 with "rear left and rear right damage" no further details. One owner until June 2020 and he now selling; when I asked he says he didn't know anything about the accident (probably true) and he is selling because he had other cars being repaired and now that those are repaired he doesn't need the 325.

I know "all sellers lie" is general advice; other than test driving, and doing a PPI, is his story believable? Not many carfaxes are one owner no accident, but normal people don't buy and sell that quickly either.

His facebook bio shows he worked at a BMW dealership. Description says "upgraded leather" but I can't see the "stitching".

Doesn't sound that far fetched - If he works at the dealer, may well have picked it up cheap to drive while his other cars were being fixed and he's now moving it on?

My Dad is doing something similar with a Hyundai Getz right now - his 4wd dropped a rod, since he still needs to get around he picked up a cheap runabout to drive while he fixes the 4wd. Once that's fixed, he'll offload the Hyundai - probably within a similar timeframe.

Much cheaper than hiring a car in the interim.

I’m always wary of cars that the seller hasn’t owned for too long. However, there are always exceptions. The seller of my 335is had only had it for a couple months, he put about 1300 miles on it. His reasoning was logical/understandable and he let me have the car for multiple days to inspect it and do extended test driving before I bought it. Full year later there have been 0 surprises with it and I’m very happy with the purchase.

TLDR make sure you do your due diligence. This isn’t as good as buying it from the first owner, but you’re likely getting a much better deal than you would otherwise and there’s a solid likelihood that there’s nothing wrong with the car that’s prompting the quick sale.

It doesn’t make sense to pay taxes and tags then turn around and sell it after a brief period of time. Do you think that he’s losing money on the deal, getting rid of an anchor or being honest with you? I would certainly get a PPI in this case.
