My frustration is due to inpa not displaying any codes after clearing them. So it's like looking for a needle in a haystack as to what the problem may be. (Exaggeration lol) It's just the thermostat is brand new and I don't want to buying additional parts when those parts aren't playing up. On another note are the sensors not built into the thermostat itself ? What sensors should i replace, coolant possibly oil ? |

I meant coolant temp sensor that's on the front lbs of engine block. But am only guessing. Unfortunately it could be any number of things, as you know.
You'll find a n55 cooling system pdf if you search n55 cooling system-meeknet It maybe of some help. you may just have to get it booked in for diagnostic but in my experience both MD & Indies can just end up throwing parts at it.

Just had my water pump and thermostat done today. Cost me £744 including parts and labour. My car has 74k on the clock. My wife's water pump went on her 325i at 40k miles. Shocking really that this should be such a common fault.

Are you sure the connector to the thermostat is plugged in the correct way around? Considering you said it was loose.. Realise this sounds stupid but I nearly connected mine the wrong way round at first as its hard to see with lack of room. Not sure this makes any difference but might be worth a check.
Otherwise you might have to do it all again and try the old thermostat you removed with the new pump, assuming the pump was the original problem. That's a ball ache I know, but might help you to rule out the thermostat, if codes aren't helping? Last edited by tuckerjenkins; 01-09-2018 at 07:23 AM.. |

How much ?? My new pump cost £46, a main stat should only cost £50/60, and a couple of hours labour. How did it cost £744 ?

A new pump from BMW dealer was £491. Euro car parts had 3 different pumps starting at £320. Even on ebay they start at over £240.These pumps are electric not mechanical, and computer controlled., £49 for a E90 pump? Lucky you.

My pump also went around the 60k mile mark. It was a horrendous trip getting recovered. When I had the pump changed I changed the thermostat as well. So far we're now on 93k miles and so far trouble free.

I just had mine done, a bit of preventative maintenance as the car ticked over 50,000 miles. N55 pump and stat cost me £335 delivered. Labour was £225.
I guess when you're in a bind with a broken down car you just have to suck it up and pay BMW retail prices.

Or have the Mondial warranty (if decent mileage) and then it's the £100 or £250 excess.
When mine went I paid £110 for the thermostat and £100 for my warranty claim. Didn't get charged on the fitting of the thermostat as it had already been removed as part of teh pump fitting.

Right, now I'm baffled !
Haven't driven the car and was going to do work on it this weekend. Drove it yesterday for about 30 mins and the needle didn't move at all. Parked it up on the drive and left it running to see what would happen. 15-20 mins later the car is at operating temp ! What ! Again tried it out, drove from Leicester to Melton Mowbray and back and it warmed up half a bar ! Left it idling for a while and it gets up to operating temp ! : |

Melton Mowbray is a 45 min drive from me at 50mph - country lanes. 1.5 hours of constant driving and nothing but 15mins of idling and its at operating temp... How do you access the water temp ? |

There are instructions on here, just search E9x hidden menu, I mainly just use it to check water temp & battery voltage

Bit late to this thread but I had my coolant temp sensor fail and had all the issues you describe: fan going crazy although engine was stone cold, engine warning lights, etc.
Changed the sensor and all was fine!

A faulty temp sensor can also be a bit dangerous too. When my sensor failed - instead of failing completely it would often give silly values - the on board temp indicator would be in the minus figures - reading -45 degrees, etc. This would put the car into an overboost situation, but because the values fluctuated you could be pulling away normally and then suddenly the car would shoot forward! A bit disconcerting to say the least!
