flashing Gearbox - What does it mean ?

I have read in few posts...

Gearbox has been flashed.
What does that mean?

Does it mean the gearbox has been remapped.
I have 2006 330d Auto , If that means remapping the gearbox what sort of benefits will i get..

My gearbox was reconditioned in 2016 as it failed..

Have a look on JF Automotives web site. I have one of their gearbox remaps & am very happy with the results, only thing that we don't get with the remap is the launch control. Everything else is as advertised.

As above. Similar to the Alpina flash as that updates the software on the gearbox too. Changes the shift pattern etc.

A flash is a remap, same thing. A flash is the process used to tune the transmission control unit. It can either change shift points, certain settings/behaviors, line pressures, or all of the above depending on the flash.

Sorry to hijack the thread, I thought only LCI gearboxes could be "flashed"?

As a fellow 2006 330D owner this is very interesting, in a spending more money way...

The Alpina flash can only be applied to cars from 2007 onwards due to the mechatronics unit, so like you my 2006 car couldn't be done.

However some have had JF Automotive do an update to their pre 2007 cars ok and have been pleased with it.

Just 335i cars or 330d too? Just been on their website and it only lists post September 2007 cars (RHD).

Just seen that JF Automotive now do the xHP mapping.

Xhp does all car and they do 06 models. No need to go to JF. You get the cables and flash it yourself.

The alpine flash is free. A windows laptop and a cable is all you need. Don't know for sure about 2006 though. If you have a '16 tcu you might be in luck.

Alpina flash cannot go on pre 07 cars. Also it's nowhere near as good as xhp according to reviews. Xhp stage 3 is on another level. It's essentially like mhd but for gearbox. You upload the flash through your android device and on port.
