Build date/compliance date

To save me a trip back to the showroom, I thought i'd ask here - the plate in the passenger door-well that is stamped 03 11 does that indicate the build date? I have a feeling it's the compliance date, so the build date would be late '10, and sometime in the future (trade-in/sale time) it would be assessed as a 2010 car?

edit - just looked at my 330 & the build date is stamped under the bonnet. So are most cars on the showroom floors still 2010 build? and to confirm, look under the bonnet?

Determination of 'how old your car is' in Australia goes by the compliance date... not build date.

So my car was complianced in OZ at 09/2010... so at sale time I advertise it as such - not the build date in Germany.

But to find out what updates are on the car, you go by the build date?

Just bumping this for another question - if a car is described as having internet, does that mean it will have all the other tech updates, eg apps & connect music to mobile?

The plate in the door shows compliance date - this is when the vehicle was deemed to meet Australian build and safety requirements when it landed here.

The build date is when the vehicle left the factory in the country of origin.

Insurance companies use the build date for premium and agreed value calculations.

Right, I always go by the actual build date, since that's the more accurate reflection of how old the car actually is.

When I buy I always look for when it left the factory in Germany, not when it was complied in Aus. It's something the dealers will always show me on the computer screen.

I think it means the spelling and grammar is poor and there are funny kittens in it.

+1, think I would go by the build date when buying a car, not the compliance date and think insurance companies and car yards too go by the build date to haggle the price down, correct me if am wrong.

Always check the build date and compliance plate of the vehicle you're looking at.

The build date signifies when a car left the production line and the compliance plate tells you when it cleared customs in Australia.

There can often be a big difference between the two and - even though it's the compliance plate that legally determines what year model a car is - the build date is still important when it comes time to selling.

true, most dealerships will try selling a car to you during end of year sales using the ruse that has new year compliance but that doesn't mean it's manufactured in the new year and will affect it's resale price by a year. When I bought mine, I insisted I wanted a new years build date and that took nearly 3 months to deliver so got it in March of that year but I atleast had a new year build model.

So for example the 'new' car in the showroom the dealer is trying to sell me, if built in say Nov last year, is already one year old!

True, if you tried selling it back say to the dealer or to a smart buyer they would haggle on it as a year old. To compensate for that loss is fine of you manage get a huge discount while buying such a car esp if you plan selling the car in a couple of years.
