255's all square set up advice needed

So, I managed to get four 18" 255 tires and am toying of the idea of going all square.

Currently, I have 18" OZ Ultraleggeras, but the fronts are only 8" wide. If I could find two 18x9 Ultraleggeras used, I'd be set, but that's kinda rare. So, I could buy two new rears from Tirerack or buy a used set of 18" rims (thinking replica - not concerned about looks really - just want something on the lighter side).

Car:
E90 xi
Lowered with KW V3

Here are what I think my options are:

18x9 OZ Ultraleggeras +40 offset
18x8.5 rims with a +35 offset (I said +35 since that seems to be one of the more popular offsets for rep wheels).

Do you think the above offsets would work?

I do have four 10mm spacers if that would help anything...

255 up front
17" x 9" ET 41 - 10mm spacer (ET 31 effectively)
-2.8 degrees front camber

I know this works.

I also know that the same person had rubbing when he moved to 18" x 9", simply because the rubber got pushed out a bit at the rim.

Good info. Rubbing on the inside for the 18x9?

I got jbass524 that setup along with a number of other friends. 17x9" with 255/40/17 fits even a 100% stock car without rubbing even with the required 10mm front spacers.

Since then Jan added camber plates and a suspension. And recently he's been running on a loaner set of 18x9's until he gets his 18x9" ARC-9 wheels mounted.

Although the offsets and rim size are exactly identical on the 17x9" and 18x9" wheel. the fact that the 18" tire is lower profile, means that the edge of the tire is much more square then the 17" setup. When I saw his setup again at Infineon, it looked close to rubbing even with the negative camber (don't remember if it actually rubbed). No way this 9" setup would work on a lowered car without camber plates. The same tire on an 8.5" rim would probably be fine on stock car.

Oh man, thanks for the advice gents. Looks like I will have to do some trial and error test fitting and then buy the necessary spacer. So far, may have a line on 18x8.5 rims with +41.

Where do I get camber plates? Do I need them on my lowered car?

Did you ever get this to work?

I'm currently shopping for a new summer setup and square 255's sounds very interesting.

I noticed that dinan sells a 19" kit for our cars that is Front:265/30-19 Rear: 275/30-19. http://www.dinancars.com/store/produ...cat=319&page=1. The site says not for xi models, but I'm not sure why.

Thumbs up

I am interested in hearing more about this too.

I have a type 162 staggered wheelset and I am thinking about going square by adding two more 18x8.5s on the front to match the rears. Not sure if the offset on the rear vs front 162 rims is gonna cause me enough trouble to warrant spacers and such but I hope not.

Interested if you did this and what you learned and gained.

-2.8 camber is very expensive with regards to tires and comfortable street driving. Don't do it.

Based on what you make such a comment? I am driving a KW clubsport suspension with -2.8 degrees camber in front. Drives brilliantly, also on the street. Very equal tirewear on the track, no problems / no crazy tirewear on the street, and I use it as a daily driver, driving to work 45 miles a day.

Past experience with track cars. I used to run between -2.5 and -3.0 for track. Yes the car handles great, but from my experience that aggressive a setting results in inner tire wear unless your car is somehow breaking the laws of friction and weight distribution.

Guys, I got one of the rims installed with my 255 tire this past weekend for my test fit. Will do a trial install in a couple of days for the front.

I'm lowered now, so a little concerned about fitment. I do have a 10mm spacer. Tire is a 255/35/18 Goodyear FI mounted on an LTW wheel with 18x9 +41 specs.

Wish me luck!

So here are some pics of my test fitment today.

I think there is enough space on the strut side. Maybe even can go down to 5mm. I don't know if there is going to be rub on the outside fender. I guess my options are to roll the fender or to go with a 5mm spacer?

I'm going to bring it in to the mechanics since I'm going to corner balance the car for an opinion. Maybe I won't have to do anything...

the inside looks sooooo close. When the progressive springs compress it looks like you might get rubbing on the outside wheel in a turn.

Fender clearance looks pretty good. Try the 5mm spacer.

Just realized that I could have turned the wheel to take a picture of the clearance. There I was sticking my camera through the tight wheel well....

Sometimes I am so stupid!

or change the springs. I changed my v3 original springs against the kw race springs (the once of the clubsport and competition suspensions. these are straight and not conic shaped. the space would then be fine.

I hope I won't need to change the springs - will be selling the setup this summer, so wanna make it work as is - just fiddle with spacers and rolling of fender as a last resort... I think the angle of the picture is a little deceiving - seems like the spring is close to the tire, but I don't think it will be an issue.

Do you even have the option to roll the fender? on my car they are plastic. I could be mistaken on yours however

1. Have you seen replica OZ Ultraleggeras? I've yet to see them, if so maybe you can score 8.5" width but I'm pretty sure originals are only the fitments you mentioned 8 or 9" wide.

2. I could be wrong but I doubt 255s will fit w/o rubbing the liners when you turn

Slightly off topic, where did you get that nice little aluminum piece for the floor jack to work correctly with the jack points? I've seen them around but can't remember where.
