As nice as this would be, I don't think it would ever happen. It's not as simple as changing the speed limit. There would have to be all sorts of investment in driver training etc from changing the driving test to maybe even introducing a special motorway test. Which I believe they have in Germany, a test for joining the autobahns.
I think if more was done to get rid of lane hoggers, the motorway would be a better place. |

On a more serious note, this was discussed on my last speed awareness course, , although the law go's way back, if you take into consideration, quicker cars, better breaking, shorter breaking distance, as well as safer cars,,,,,,, SO they say
90mph on a UK motorway will never happen..... |

Clearly the majority of drivers are capable of driving above 70 on a motorway. When I'm doing 70 on a motorway most of the other cars are overtaking me, especially drivers of 2 litre diesels

It's because of many reasons, including. It was designed for high speed. Like low gradient changes and shallow corners. Plus people are conditioned to the speed and know how to act. I'm sure 100 or 120 mph would be perfectly safe on our motorways but think of the revenue loss for old bill and the insurance companies.
A country where people get to work sooner and are more productive. Heaven forbid!

Love driving on the autobahn though. |

There has been around 17000 signatures since I looked & signed it on the 7th. Still a long way to go to 100 000

I think the only way this will happen is with autonomous cars.
It would have been nice if say they tried it out on the M6 Toll Road (it was whacky races when it first opened anyway) to see how people drove. The funny thing is i think a lot of drivers wouldn't go past 90 as it becomes 'hard work'. But it's also very dependent on the car you drive. |
