N55 VANOS rattle loose bolts

I recently bought a 2012 335i N55 E92. Two days later I got engine malfunction reduced power with VANOS related codes 2D55, 2D54 and a host of others. I tried to return to car to the dealer to no avail. Called the BMW dealership to see if the VANOS rattle I presumed from loose bolts was covered under the recall campaign 14v-176 but that did not work either. So I'm back at either paying a mechanic to do this or tackling this job myself.

My question is has anyone done this and how difficult is it for a moderately skilled DIYer?

Or if u did take to a independent mechanic how much did it cost you?

Thank you to any one that can help I seem to be in quite the situation.

First step would be to confirm this is the issue. You will need to take the valve cover off to look at the bolts. If a bolt is sheared off I would really push back on BMW for the recall. Are you out of the production date window for the recall?

I contacted bmw and they looked it up by my VIN and stated their was no open recall on my vehicle and nothing for this issue.
