I disagree. There are very specific parameters in the DME for the cam profile; ramp rates, max lift, duration, they're all defined... it might "work" but it definitely won't be optimized.

that said, I'm very interested if the regrinds work out. I have a feeling that the lift/duration of the N/A motors is more aggressive than the Turbo cars, and that the Shrick cams for the N54 wouldn't help us (even though I believe they would fit in the N52).

I believe you, no worries. Todd may not fully understand the details of how the DME deals with Valvetronic or even the model used in the feedback plant. I'll ping him again, could you please pm me the detailed sort of questions I need to ask in order to get the appropriate parameters to code into the DME? If I can get the parameters there won't be any problems coding them.

I take it there's no way to be able to assess the needed parameters on the dyno while doing a race tune, correct?

Nothing new, they're sitting awaiting install. Car's in the shop for something else and I've been busy. Finally got around to asking for a quote today as one of 13 line items, four other line items have already been quoted.

I have to know the number. What was the ETA they gave, and do you have something to datalog the ECU? You'll probably need a retune.

No you don't. Trust me. It's a dealership. Yow.

No ETA yet, the quote is thirteen line items with one of them the cams and several more items already quoted. I'll ask about just doing the cams tomorrow, probably can be done as soon as I'm ready to drop it off. The rest of the work will take weeks, probably four or five, maybe more.

I can use BMWLogger to get oil temp, IAT, and intake pressure at each run before and after. Supposed to work without a retune, we'll see.

I have no idea what parameters exist in the MSV80 that would relate to the cams so I can't ask Todd for the information to code in. Thus a retune isn't immediately accessible.

Well it's certainly going to be louder, yet more uncomfortable, and more difficult to drive. Why I think that's a feature is a stumper...

And whose idea was it to put freakin carpet in a car? Damn but that's just jacked up. Baffles the shit outta me.

Uh just in case no one has found out yet

Schrick already makes N52 cams

They don't make N54 cams, confirmed with pics, all their catalogues are mislabeled, they are in fact for N52.

I don't know about that. While i do believe N54 cams will fit an N52, the durations and intake/exhaust durations ddon't make sense for an NA application.

What do you mean "confirmed by pics"? N52 and N54 cams look the same.

You might want to contact them for N52 cams. They told me they had none for this engine.

Scheduling installation for some time after the 20th.

Was at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson Saturday running the 1.3 mile CCW track with Apex Driving Academy. Logged a couple of sessions, this is the last one and has the fastest lap of the day which is virtually the same as the continuous lap and very close to the theoretical fastest. It's a seriously technical track with lots of blind corners and hills and runoffs that'll keep you from overcooking turns once you see them.

Had some traffic into the hairpin, a spec Miata in front and an M3 with a Dinan supercharged S52 in the middle. There was a fully track prepped and trailered E46 M3 running but on PSS tires since R-Comps aren't allowed in Intermediate. OK driver but had to point me by early on in this and the previous session and continued to lose ground with each lap.

The supercharged M3 couldn't get away and couldn't pass the spec Miata either. Took all day to get fast enough to keep up with him, he's an instructor elsewhere and drives very well. But this is a technical track were horsepower doesn't count for much so not a surprise. We agreed we needed a car with my car's suspension and his car's engine.

Will be interesting to run this track again with the cams installed and see if the lap time changes substantially. I'm guessing not as the time lost, other than in traffic, is in the corners where there's much to be gained. Oh yeah, there was a Lotus with an Advanced class driver running in a few sessions and his car had R-Comps on it. Holy crap was he quick in the corners. Could catch him once but then he flicked through the corner and the next and was gone gone gone. Gotta get to Advanced, gotta run R-comps, gotta gotta gotta...w00t

Awesome post. Ya gotta get a dash mount camera and catch some action, it sounds like it's really diverse and competitive out there!

Can't freakin wait to get some track time under my belt.. Though i have a feeling i'm going to be on a slippery slope and the drivability of my car is gonna go out the window once i start modding for it hahah. Gonna need to find a new daily once that happens.

It's still working just fine, haven't made any adjustments at all, doesn't seem like any are needed. It felt perfect on the 1.3 Saturday and it was a kick to rotate it through the hairpin in second winding it to redline. It's basically like a cut into a hillside with the adjacent part of the track above so the reflection off the dirt wall is fantastic with the windows down. Helluva track.
