What's so amazing about those? The designs are unappealing and gaudy.

How much do you charge for this service if some of us could setup some sort of group buy and mail in a batch of keys to swap?

Somebody ought to build one into a watch. Wear it on your wrist, rarely walk out the door without it and you'd never accidentally leave it in the car or the trunk. Less chance of losing it too.

Make it as fancy and expensive as you want. Somebody will buy it.

Is this the correct retrofit key? Says 315mhz but want to confirm if all 315mhz chips are both 315/434 compatible?

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/331901559678

Haha I know. I was thinking of you when I mentioned that GB. Even better if we can find someone local in SoCal. Car is getting XPel'd and tinted at the shop now. Hopefully after the holidays we can meet up for a shoot!

It's not like BMW don't have a clue what people want or like or what BMW is capable of in the key department...it's just cost maybe they should offer an optional key called a tech key...something like the 7 series key but shrunk and fewer options

I think the new 7 key is functionally and aesthetically better than any of the keys posted here from other auto manufacturers.

Hi Sean - can you confirm if this is the correct key with appropriate 315/434mhz chipset to perform the IC swap?

Sarcasm alert.

Does this void the warranty of the car if the door handles don't work or ignition starter goes out??

Nice work BTW to retrofit this. Someone needs to work on getting the 7 series key fob to work on the m3/4.

Tell us more!
I took 3 layers of plexiglass and hollowed it out to fit the PCB. At first I tried to make it with the buttons, but that area of the plexi was too weak and kept cracking. I decided to remove the buttons all together (I have comfort access and don't use them anyway). I changed the battery to a 2032 which is about half the size as the original. Then I painted it, added the stickers, and clear coated the whole thing. I really need to get access to a 3D printer or a cnc machine to make it that much better.

I left room on the side to be able to add the physical key. Just haven't felt the need to do it yet. I have a few ideas to add buttons to the side (not the originals).
Make me one!!!!
If you're serious send me a PM

The only option I can think of so far is to paint it to match the cars exterior colour like porsche do...I put real carbon on the back with a recessed M logo to finish it off

Can be done without buying a key or sending it off...tape paint and clear coat

Shouldn't be too expensive as we charge only a shop rate of $65/hr for rework. My concerns are the following:

- Labor time for dis-assembling the key enclosures (without damaging) on both the original and replacement key fobs
- No Functional Test, you won't know if it'll work until you receive the key back

This might be nit-picky but i'm assuming because BMW is European and they follow the Euro Environmental regulations for electronics that we'll have to use ROHS solder which is a tad costlier.

So, unless someone wants to be a guinea pig....I won't know precisely how long it takes without a sample. I'm estimating conservatively, 30 mins?

Thanks for the follow up. I see your points and they are pretty important especially the functional test part. I'll be in the SF bay area in January for a buddy's baby shower. Any chance we can meetup on a Sat to test this out? Or if someone who is local can volunteer to test this out then that would be even better. Anyone?!
