hey diesel folks - trying to compare to the Benz D

Hey guys, first and foremost I still own the bimmer so I am entitled to post on this page lol
Picked up the GL350 bluetec, If you guys have comparison questions I can look into and let you know .. First impressions, the car definitely has more low end torque, that vehicle is a 7k pounder and it doesnt make it feel sluggish .. second thing I noticed it gives better mpg than the bimmer did, I got 28 on the highway with the alphabet soup still in place ... gear shift are slow, ride is weird (airmatic is confused, does damp the potholes but sometimes thrashes passengers around, I heard its due to sway bars..)
lol thats all I have experienced so far ..
Now is there anyone that can advise if tuning on this engine OM642 is as viable as it is on our cars, there's definitely no forum support for that car so I've to lurke on here for some stuff ...

28 on the highway? My literate d will get 35 mpg highway at 80 mph. 28 is insanely low.

My Treg TDi (which is DPF/SCR free) gets 33 on the hwy. And handles far better than the MB GL350 I test drove....

Doesn't that car have like 7+ gears? Also is it the one with 2 reverse gears? I remember hearing of a benz suv with two reverse gears and thinking it was something a bond villain would have in his car.

Nah it has only 1 reverse gear lol
Handling actually isn't bad on high speeds, the airmatic firms up outer shocks at high speeds I guess, at lower speeds it's crap (body roll)
Whats the weight of your toureg? I'm saying 28 with mixed traffic, not purely highway .. still getting to know the car, the x5 doesn't give more than 24 for sure though

What year is the gl350 and what year was the x5d? Makes a big difference as the transmissions and engines changed around over the last several years.

I didn't ever drive a gl but I drove the touareg 3.0tdi and the x5d, the touareg seemed to have a bit tighter suspension but it was clear the x5d was the better suv, as it ought to be as it was quite a bit more expensive. The gl is a gigantic suv so 28 mpg is pretty good.

No forum support? Try this link: http://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-x164-77/

I don't know a whole lot about the tunes available for the GL350 since my wife has the 450, but there are at least a few. Check out Green Diesel Engineering: http://www.greendieselengineering.co...o+Tune&model=+

I don't think its for full deletes, but at the least it'll delete the EGR. Renntech has a tune as well: http://www.renntechmercedes.com/inde...-464-tq-detail

Congrats on your new car :-) 28mpg is very good do you plan to tow?

I really think the car is under damped is what your sensing. Its a strut thing. I considered getting a ML/GL before purchasing my X5. What stopped my wife and I is it always feels like the mercedes has blown shocks. Its excellent at soaking up road imperfections, but comes with a very very busy ride with a lot of head toss. My x5 has adaptive drive which has the system which disengages the anti roll bar over bumps, but resists cornering, and its excellent, but rare

Personally, enjoy the car, its different but not bad. I did like the engine, but mods are limited.

That's exactly what it is thanks for putting it in words I wasn't able to describe it
Adaptive drive is awesome, quick ques, what will happen if I remove the sway bars ? Or go with wider tires, stock is 275, maybe go 295 ?
