Alpina D3 MAF > Turbo
Hi All,
Just managed to bag myself an Alpina D3 turbo, and am now looking at fitting it (happy days as I was about to pull the trigger on refurbing my MHI one!) so the 320D maf is a stupid oval shape (really, what were they thinking) im looking to find out what pipe Alpina used to get from stupid MAF shape to the larger Garrett turbo inlet. I'm thinking a 330D one (since they used a 330D intercooler, what other parts did they pillage...) but I cant be sure. anyone have an idea? |

The same MAF is fitted to 325d, 330d, E60 520d-530d, and all the other cars with the same engines as well so it's not just the 320d at fault here.
You would have to use LCI parts to be able to fit a different MAF.

im not looking at changing the MAF, I'm just looking to find out what pipe Alpina used to get from the standard MAF to the Garrett turbocharger they used on the D3 (as the turbo inlet is much larger than that on the MHI TF035 fitted to the 320D)
I'm wondering if they just used a 330D item, or if they had one custom made? |

i reckon a 330d MAF to Turbo pipe will fit just read this with regard to the D3:
"The turbo, intercooler, injectors are from a 330d with a tweaked/re map on the ECU" i would head down to a breakers who has a 330d and trial fit it to your turbo. EDIT Just been doing some RealOEM trawling and the MAF for the 320d (m47n2) is the same part as used on the 330d (m57n2) so if the D3 turbo has the same compressor size as the 330D turbo then the 330d MAF-Turbo pipe will fit. the turbo isn't from a 330D, its a special order from Garrett. the 330D uses a GT2260, which is much larger, and would result in loads more power, but with bags lag to boot. the 6 cyl engine also mounts the turbo inbetween cylinders 3 and 4, as a result it sits much further back from the leading edge of the engine compared to the 4cyl. on the 4cyl the Maf outlet and turbo inlet are almost in-line vertically, which isnt the case on the Cyl as far as i am aware (looking at used parts on ebay) |

Agreed i recall reading its not a direct 330d turbo. but i thought i read somewhere it had the 330d sized compressor married to a 320d friendly turbine. A hybrid.
ah so it may use a special shortened version of the 330d MAF-Turbo pipe. May have to get creative with a length of aftermarket boost hose. |

yea im not sure what ill do.
need to see if I can steal a look at a 330D setup, and see if it could maybe be modified or something. (Or ideally have a look at an actual D3!) |

yeah that's what i would do...finding a D3 (single turbo) maybe difficult. 330D shouldn't be an issue though

this would be great if you could! you will need to take the front air scoop off to see anything, but if you could grab a part number, or snap a couple of pictures of the U shaped pipe, that would be fantastic! it will look something like this: |
