Unless you can teleport the OEM filter out and the K&N filter in, I think you have to take the whole box out. Like the guy above me said, it's really easy, takes less than 5 mins to do.

The carbon filter is to prevent gases from coming OUT of the engine after it shuts off. It makes a car a SULEV instead of a ULEV. Take it out. There are NO negative effects.

Did this today, drove it a little down the street and felt a difference but it might have been placebo. Does it take a little for your ecu to figure it out?

It does take some adjusting. The wider range of driving the better. Full throttle, etc.

So I have also performed this mod, and here is a hint! Soak the filter and box with water prior to doing this! It makes the filter easer to cut out and stops alot of the dust that comes off during cutting! Your going to have to wash the air box anyway so Why not make your life more easy!
Also your not going to win any races by doing this but if you like to hear your car as you drive and don't want to spend $400 on an intake this mod is for you! As for the issues with dead spots in the rpm band, take your time and don't rush! Putting it back together properly is the key! Also make sure you clean your mass air flow sensor while it's out! Cleaner can be bought at autozone, just be careful it's a very sensitive part! If you damage it BMW likes them alot so you will pay for it. This mod and my BMS power box made my car come alive! It has also improve the drone from my after market eisenman exhaust! Don't get me wrong your gonna have drone from any free flowing exhaust but this helps drastically!

Best 45 minute mod ever
I removed airbox, then the MAF, used a box cutter to remove the carbon filter, a dremel and a flat file to sand down the rough spots, then vacuumed out the box, then washed it out with a hose and let it get bone dry in the sun. Pulled the power from the battery for 1 minute to re-set the computer, re-connected and fired her up. Not really noticeable sound wise, but man it revs so much freer now! The lag when fist hitting the gas is totally gone, and it seems to pull smoothly through the entire RPM range now, where as before there were little flat spots in the power band. Blipping the throttle to rev match on downshifts is like butter now, before there'd be this little lag and then you end up over revving or missing the downshift waiting for the engine to rev, not anymore blip the throttle and bam! rev's come right up. Didn't do the K&N as no one had it in stock today and I've only got 19k on the car so no need to change the filter just yet anyways.

Pain in my ass pipe
Awesome Dyi. That pipe that feeds the engine is a pain to put back in, I kept rubbing up against other parts of the car and I hope I didn't damage the maf cause I kept jamming it up against the metal ring band (around pipe end). I had a Tiburon before my e90 and boy the Germans could care less how to make systems simple to maintain.
Btw, Good idea about cutting out carbon filter after wetted. Cheers |

Once you unplug the wires and remove or loosen the two torxs screws, it should wiggle out. There is a pretty good rubber o-ring type seal. It's not fragile. Just don't bend the shiny parts.

Finished this up today since it was so unusually warm for january. I didn't unplug the battery. Idk if its just a placebo effect, but it seems a bit smoother. People didn't notice the biggest differences until after a 50 mile drive cycle? I did the K&N Filter and Charcoal filter delete |

Just following up with my charcoal filter delete + K&N Filter...
Definetly get an additional 2 mpg's driving around. I used to get around 27 or 28 driving to and from work, but I'm consistently getting 29.5 mpg. Driving in manual mode, and honestly like I'm in no rush. Highway only driving gets me 31.7 mpg crusing between 70 and 80. |

Give it a few days. It's subtle, and the computer will adjust slightly for the additional air, and provide a little more gas to keep the mixture correct. Theoretically.

Next= clean Vanos. I do need to clean my engine bay before. I can hardly see the vanos solenoids. Theyre full of oil grime. Never washed my engine bay ever. |
