John Edmund Murphy. My dad, he passed 13 years ago. Grew up poor and didn't get an education. Hustled pool to make ends meet. Powerful protestant work ethic. Self made, he taught me right from wrong and to be honest. Never felt sorry for himself, not a single day despite having a fucking tough go of it.

I miss him everyday.

John Basilone (November 4, 1916 - February 19, 1945) was a United States Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who was killed in action during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle for Henderson Field in the Guadalcanal Campaign, and the Navy Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was the only enlisted Marine to receive both of these decorations in World War II.

I enjoy heroic bad ass people that aren't common names. What some people have done in the world just amazes me. Couple of my favorite bad asses that few have ever heard of:
  • “Mad” Jack Churchill: He fought throughout the entirety of World War II armed only with a longbow, arrows, and a Scottish broadsword. In July 1943, he led his commando unit from their landing site in Sicily with his broadsword hanging from his belt, his longbow and arrows around his neck, and his bagpipes under his arm. After infiltrating the town, he took 42 men prisoner, including a mortar squad.

When the war was over, Churchill was totally bummed out about it, remarking, “If it wasn’t for those damn Yanks, we could have kept the war going another 10 years.

  • Juliane Koepcke: On Dec. 24, 1971, a Peruvian commercial airliner crashed in a thunderstorm over the Amazon, killing every one of the 92 crew members and passengers aboard, except for one person…

High school senior Juliane Koepcke fell a total of 2 miles from the sky into the Amazon rain forest strapped to her seat — and walked away from the accident. For 10 days. Through the jungle. With a concussion, a broken collarbone, multiple broken ribs, and a hole in her right arm. Then she met up with some local lumberman, borrowed their canoe, and rowed home.

  • John Fairfax: This dude led an interesting life. At age 9, he settled a dispute with a pistol via a duel and won. At age 13, he decided to leave home and go live in the Amazon jungle, where he survived by hunting and foraging. At age 20, he got into a fight with a Jaguar and survived. At this point he decided to become a pirate. Later in life he became the first person to row solo across the ocean.
