Is there a way to make backup of DME?

I haven’t found a solid answer to this. Is there a way to make backup copy of the original dme firmware using any of the tools like INPA, winKFP, NCS etc? Does anyone have a guide for N54?

Not with any of these bmw tools. It's possible, requires it to be done on the bench with an external programmer.

Any reason you need a backup?

Need MHD install for more monitoring parameters. Want to backup in case something goes wrong. what kind of external programmer is needed? Is this how you clone the dme if going from msd80 to a msd81?

Well you can always reinstall mhd or flash new maps anyway. Autohex, Autel maybe some other cheaper ones available.

You can't really clone an msd80 to msd81, as msd81 has different firmware. Usually reading ISN number from msd80 DME and writing it to msd81 then i'll work, followed by flashing the right zusb and coding injectors.

Doesn't MHD automatically back it up? Or maybe that's just the flash, idk, but seems like major overkill if that's all you're trying to do.

Yep, I'm pretty sure MHD will take a backup of the OEM DME files before it ever updates it with new tune files. It's been a while since I've used MHD, but I think you can go in and force it to do a backup on the DME also...without having to change any of the tune files?

Ended up making a backup with MHD. I used Stock screen > Generate updated stock file button. Not sure if this backup includes the original BMW bootloader of the DME. I wanted backup of my DME in case BMW has changed/flashed anything to it in the past.
